Why One “Moderate Drinker” Gave it Up…

According to Molly Hurley Moran, professor of writing at the University of  Georgia, “Giving up alcohol was not a sacrifice; it was an act of imagination.” Loved this piece. You’ll find it here.

This article really “spoke” to me. I say that I only have 2 or 3 drinks a night but like Molly, they are BIG drinks. I find it so interesting how many talented, educated women seem to share this problem. Look at the MWO members…I wonder what it means?

Oh yes, I know those drinks. The biggest wine glasses you can find! I’m glad that Molly was able to look at how much she was really drinking and then write such an eloquent essay about it. It felt a lot like looking in a mirror. I relate so much to those quiet nights at home not making a fuss or getting in trouble, just slowing ruining my health and my self-esteem.

I appreciate how Molly is able to turn it around and look at all she is gaining by NOT DRINKING. I think that is a key concept in giving up alcohol….seeing it as a positive step forward, rather than as a deprivation!
