I like More2's approach with it. If it stays in your system for five days or more why would you take it every day? Again, I am not expert on this drug but it seems like it should not have to be taken daily, unless taking it daily is more of a mindset issue.

I've been on it for almost 2 weeks. I got it from river pharmacy and I take 1/2 a 250 everyday. The 1st day I only took a quarter tab at a time just to make sure. I have eaten vinegar with no problem. I really want to drink but I'm sure it will pass in time. bird

I took Antabuse a few years ago and just have to say that I THOUGHT I wanted a drink just because I knew I couldn't! When I went off of it and started drinking again, it was SO disappointing and anticlimactic. I don't know if anyone else has had this experience but looking back, I was just like a 3 year old! I want it because I can't have it. Just wanted to put that out there.

Lucy I'm just so thrilled that you are getting great results from this! It's been great for me too. I got a vinegar reaction when I first started with it but I've intentionally experimented with both vinegar and N/A beer and wine and no reaction! must have been my body adjusting...?
anyhow this drug is so common and has been used by so many people for so long I don't think it could be very dangerous and be kept a secret. I'm taking it the morning I go on the road with workmates or out to a place that is difficult for me. during the work week when I'm at home I don't have any triggers/stresses that make me want to drink so i don't take it. If I started to have temptation to drink during the week mind you I'd be popping it whenever needed.
And yes you can find it online at riverpharmacy.com etc. if you have to get it that way.

Hippie, I've not heard of dosing up so quickly like you did. is that what your doctor suggested?

Default Antabuse

Hi to all,
I use Antabuse sometimes and it has no side effects whatsoever - except if you use alcohol. I also tested it with a glass of wine but the redness of my face ( bright red) and difficult breathing was so embarassing that I will not try the test again. However, I am still struggling the demon and sometimes deliberately skip the AB when I know a party is coming up in a week or so. (It takes about a week before it is completely out of your system.)
I made a decision to go to AA regularly and somehow that is working for me better. I have not had AB for a long time and has reached 5 days af with no struggle at all. (Slipped last night though but not heavily and feel strong again today.)
Yes, I think trying AB is worth it but if you are very serious get someone to administer it every morning.
Then you KNOW you cannot have a drink and your personal struggle is over.
Love
Jessie.
PS. I also committed myself to serious Bible study and it sure gives strength and is very, very interesting. (Might become addicted to that instead) God is infinitely good.

On the question that if it stays 5 days in your system why take it daily: I am sure it will still work even if you take it every 4 to 5 days. It builds up in your system. I have not tried but if u have been taking it for a full 14 days you will probably still get a severe reaction even 14 days after the last one. Has anybody done that experiment?

My doctor said it would take time to get to full force in my system. I am taking 250mg once a day. Period.

I agree with Lushy about being careful, I felt that way about Topa, too, though.

A week before I went to shrink to ask for Antabuse, I went in for a full physical and told my gp I was going to take Antabuse if at all possible. She had a full blood work up done, liver, thyroid, vitamins, etc (7 vials of blood, yikes!!) and said she would call with the results. I do have a vit D deficiency which is very much related to gastric bypass AND alcoholism. So added Vit D to my already massive vitamin intake as well as go into the sun a min of 10 minutes/day.

I went to shrink and discussed my heavy alcoholism and inability to stop myself and wanting Antabuse. He agreed ONLY after bloodwork, which I had faxed to him from doctor. I got the script but the pharmacy in my area did not carry it. Sooo, I got depressed and drank some wine, then some more and then said, "shit, I can't even go sober a couple of days waiting for it to come in." I checked into detox, had hubby bring the Antabuse and before I walked out took my first pill.

I went to dinner last night at Macaroni Grill, one of my fav places to drink wine. I had a fleeting thought and then thought "on yeah, getting sick and pucking" just doesn't seem worth it. Our dinner tab was half its normal cost!!

I smiled all the way home in MY brand new car we had just bought!!

Thanks for all the information. If I run into any issues with Antabuse, I will post them here.

So far, my only issue is I have been sober 5 days now. I like that issue!!!!

Love and best wishes to all,
Cindi

Yeah I agree with Det. Great News Cindi I'm so glad this is working for you and the most important thing in all this is the fact that you have remained sober for 5 days.

Here's to living sober!!

Love and Happiness
Hippie
