Default Available Meds in SA?

Are these meds like Chambix, Topmol, etc available in South Africa?
All I know is that you get something like Valium in rehab to calm and help with withdrawals.
My hubby was put on antideps at one stage but it made him suicidal & he was still drinking. The other treatment we considered was a drip that flushes your system, multivits with minerals, etc that the whole family had to take and do councelling too.

Hi Artcat!

It would be very presumptuous of me and naive to think I had any idea of what the current situation is like for meds in South Africa. But, there is a member here called jinja who lives in Johannesburg who I think may be able to shed some light on the situation. I'm sure she wouldn't mind if you wanted to send her a private message asking her advise. Depending on your financial situation you also have the option of shopping online for these meds. But a word of warning, be careful when doing this and I would probably advise you use links from sites such as this that have been properly researched. There are many dodgy sites out there that are looking to make a quick buck, so be careful. If you want to mention to jinja that I suggested you PM her, if that makes things seem a little easier for you, then please do so. But I'm sure she wll be only too happy to help you.

As far as my own experience goes with meds I have taken 2 types of anti-depressants in the past and also Antabuse on 2 occasions. I too continued to drink while on anti-depressants many years ago like your husband and I feel I didn't get any 'real' benefit from them due to this. When I tried another anti-depressant more recently I had some rather nasty side effects causing water-retention and weight gain. There is a thread concerning Antabuse in this folder as well where I have commented on my experiences with it as well. My overall opinion is that the placebo effect has played more of a role in my success than anything TBH. But that's just my opinion!!lol

Love and Happiness
Hippie
xx
