I have not taken topamax without prescription, in fact took it only briefly as it made me so sleepy I just couldn't function. But I would be very surprised if anything showed up in blood work after 8 days. You can probably find the info on how long it stays in your system on the drug info sheet or on the web. Things like lowering white blood cells are usually rare side effects, I think, and you were on a very low dose for only a week.

Hi Julie,
I can't give any advice about Topa without a Dr's presciption but just wanted to give you some encoragement to maybe speak to your Doc about Topa, I know it's hard but it was the best decision I ever made and like you say you could already feel the benifets but you don't want it messing up other areas of your health. I have been on Topa for a while now and don't regret it but I have been open and honest with my GP! Good luck!! DeeBee |

Hi Julie
I've been on Topa for almost a year. For the first three or four months I bought it online and never told my doctor. I finally changed doctors and now have a prescription. You were on a VERY low dose and only for eight days. If you have any abnormalities in thyroid or wbc counts, I would look for other reasons, not the topa, since there are so many common causes of abnormalities in those numbers. I wouldn't overlook the other possibilities. I seriously doubt the topa would be the cause, but you might want to be honest with your doctor if you have to. I find that most doctors are used to dealing with alcoholism. We think it's a big deal, but they deal with it all the time and are generally very non-judgemental and try to be helpful. If your doctor freaks out, then find a new doctor. Hope that helps. Good luck with the topa. I think it is great. It has helped me tremendously.

Hi-
I have read all the Topamax survey but missed all the action I am a fairly new to this site and a fairly new Topa user (3 weeks at 75 mg) and was wondering if there are any others new or fairly new to Topa who would like to post w/me?Thanks. |

Well, I'm back on the Topamax and happily so. I'm sure at this stage it is just psychological, but I really seem to have more self control almost immediately when I start taking this med. I started with all my vitamins too. I'm feeling a little run down these past few days, but I'm sure that's because I drank for several days in a row and am now ridding myself of all those toxins. Just wanted to log on and say thanks to Roberta for her My Way Out program. It really has given me such a sense of optimism. Any one who hasn't read the book, I can't recommend it enough. Good luck everyone.

I started without doctor supervision. I ordered it online, but after a few weeks I worked up the courage to go to my doctor and be straight-forward and he prescribed Topamax for me. Actually, that was just yesterday! If he wouldn't have, I would have continued to take it without doctor supervision. I would have just followed the dosage schedule outlined in the My Way Out book. Have you considered trying another doctor? Otherwise,I know there are several people here who order it online. I was one of them, but I was nervous about not talking to my doctor because I was on other meds and honestly I was afraid to be upfront about the whole drinking thing, but thankfully he was willing to prescribe it even though he wasn't all that familiar with it being used for alcohol craving. Look forward to hearing how you are doing. Good luck.
