      Re: Express your Gratitude

I am grateful that the little calf we found 3 days ago near death out in the pasture is alive and thriving! It had been born 5 days ago and looked just fine. But 3 days ago when Mr. D checked on the cows he found it in the bale feeder listless and weak. We brought it into the barn. The vet came and tube fed it and gave it antibiotics. Since then it has gradually been improving. Even last night, we weren't sure it was going to make it. But this morning, it greeted us with a tiny little "moo" for the first time and came forward for the bottle right away! It appears that the mother simply had lost interest in mothering. Perhaps she is too old. She was completely uninterested in it and didn't seem bothered at all when we took it away from her. Anyway, I am grateful the calf is healthy and thriving today. The grandchildren would have been broken-hearted if it had died so I am doubly grateful that they didn't have to suffer that loss.

Tonight I'm grateful that I'll soon be opening up the greenhouse and getting ready to plant seeds..

      Re: Express your Gratitude

Cowboy: seeds! New life! We are taking a trip next week, but before I go I will put my warm-start seeds in their pots with labels. Then I can just water them they day we get home I usually start warm season plants the last week in March. I don't have a greenhouse, but the sunny window in the garage works pretty well. I bought an enclosure where I can put them at night with a heat lamp, that I am setting up in the garage.
My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.

      Re: Express your Gratitude

Last summer when I tried to quit I signed up for the Hip Sobriety school. Sadly, on vaca again I chucked it all out the window! Then, I was too embarrassed to jump back in so I just let it slide.
Today I am thankful that HS is so amazing that they allow you to access the course materials during the future courses! And, the founder improves the course each round so the course is just that much better! There are weekly videos, mantras etc.

I really enjoy planting tomatoes, long English cucumbers, and flowers @Sunbeam. It sounds to me like you got everything in order to get an early start on the growing season. Amazing what we can come up with to do the things we love to do!

This year I think we're going to put in some potatoes and maybe pickling cucumbers in the new garden area that I worked up a couple of years ago. The greenhouse is more of a solarium, with just the outside left to dirt on 3 sides. 3 or 4 years back, the tomatoes and cucumbers inside started to turn yellow and die and each year it steadily got worse. I figured it was spider mites causing the problem, but last year I finally talked to our local agronomist to see if I was missing something. Turns out it wasn't spider mites at all, the soil is contaminated with Fusarium wilt, quite common up here he said. So I have to cover the beds with black poly and leave them till next year. The heat under the black poly will take care of the Fusarium, so it looks like it's be container gardening inside for me this year!

And so with that, I'm grateful for the local agronomists and the wealth of free advice they give...
