    First AF weekend-tips anyone?

Hello, has anyone got helpful tips for being AF at the weekend? This will be my first (the first successful one anyway:H and I'm feeling hopeful but scared.

As I'm on maternity leave from work, the 'weekend' shouldn't really have any significance, should it?. Somehow still that friday night bottle of wine beckons though- 'I've got myself and the kids through another week- I deserve it!'. The usual excuses we all know...

I didn't plan any socialising to make it easier for myself and have bookeed a babysitter for sunday am to go to the gym(I'm a single parent), but any advice would be welcome, thanks!

I've been AF for 3 out 4 days now and am folowing the program in full apart from the meds:thanks:

For my first AF weekend I didn't go anywhere. I stayed in the safety of my own home and went nowhere that I could buy or get wine. I cooked nice food for myself, had long hot baths and read great books. In fact I generally spoilt myself the whole time to congratulate myself on my acheivement (while it was happening). I also cleaned (I know that's not really a treat, but having a sense of achievement is) things that hadn't been done for a long time - bookshelves, cupboards and the like.

The gym is a great idea!
It always seems impossible until it's done....

      Miss CDJ,

Find anything you can do to stay abstinent. You are pregnant?

Keep busy, without knowing you I can't tell you what "busy" is, but find stuff to do that keeps you away from restaurants, bars and home (if you keep alcohol in the house) that will distract you.

      You can do this.

Go to a bookstore and browse, go to play putt putt. I do not know. Do something. anything to keep you sober. (A movie??)

We are rooting for you. You can do this!!

      Love,
      Cindi

I just joined MWO. I'm awaiting my first shipment of CD's and products. I'm going to ask my doctor for the medication and I am hoping that he won't give me any trouble in prescribing it. I will be anxious to hear how well you do over the week end. First starts and re-starts [for me] are always scarey. It's the fear of failing. I think if we give ourselves permission to fail... or at least not beat ourselves up... it makes it easier to get thru the moment. Just like the book says... Journal it... write down what you're feeling. It might just help.

            AF weeknd update

:thanks: Thanks for your sound advice for an AF weekend everyone. So far so good, it's now evening and there's been no cravings so far. Flip- nice food and a chilled out evening sounds good, I got some very nice, expensive fish , fresh raspberries and luxurious bubblebath so wil indulge (not all at the same time!). I am saving at least ?5 by not buying wine after all...

If I can get through tonight, the rest of the weekend will be easy, I'm sure...
Will plan some DVD watching too for later. It's amazing how many programmes and films have drinking scenes in them, though- finger on the fast forward button!!

db2fromala, thanks for your message, I'm not pregnant but have a 9 month old baby and 10 year old son- I need to do this for them too...:h

Good advice for you there.....do nice things and keep busy!

Something that helped me when the craving moments came was to remind myself that everything passes....everything changes....the cravings come and go....the evening will pass and then it will be tomorrow......waking up with another day sober under your belt feels so good!

Good Luck.....have a lovely weekend looking after yourself. What would alcohol do for you? Nothing! Stay strong XXX

Just hand me the chocolate and.........I'll consider my position. My solicitor has advised me to say no more than that.

I, too, stayed in. Ate a LOT of food LOL! Played with my little one, and puttered around the house. Like you, I made no commitments for visitors or otherwise. Spend your weekend pampering yourself. Keep busy tho. You can do this! Congrats on your days AF thus far!!!

                  Hi missCDJ,
It`s definitely the safest bet to plan to stay home, and you must stock up on everything you could possibly need by way of food etc., so as not to accidentally-on-purpose find yourself having to go to a shop that sells booze because you forgot to buy some essential.

And you really should allow yourself to be a little selfish........buy yourself something nice in place of the booze........do a couple of beauty treatments........pamper yourself........reward yourself for getting through your 1st AF weekend. I couldn`t possibly give my personal seal of approval to cleaning though!!! lol

I think the 1st AF weekend gets loads of people really worked up........we see the weekend as the highlight of the week as regards booze, but after a time the weekend will cease to bother you.

Wishing you love and heaps of strength to help you through,

                  Staright Impress x

                      I (almost) did it!

Hi everyone thanks for your messages of support and tips.:l All in all I had a laid-back, enjoyable weekend cooking, gardening, reading, playing with my kids. The only 'blip' was Saturday night when a (moderate-drinker)friend came round at short notice with takeaway chinese food and a bottle of wine. We shared the bottle, but I'm not going to beat myself up about this as I wasn't tempted to buy any more when she'd gone home, and I still got to the gym on Sunday morning! The old me would have got through another bottle, felt crap in the morning and cancelled any activities...

Have had no real cravings or withdrawal symptoms- yippee!! I've been eating loads but if I put on a few pounds it'll still be worth it just to be sober!

You're doing great! Just remember to take 1 day at a time. When i first started out AF, I kept posting on MWO several times a week even daily. The help I got from everyone kept me from drinking. Keep your chin up!
