    Calorie Burning.

Finally going to join the gym to help me in my recovery.
I know certain exercises burn a set amount of calories per hr., but is this a reliable way to estimate how many calories exercise will make us burn??

Also, could anyone give an indication of the amounts of calories each type of exercise burns?

    Thanks,

Here is one link, but it will only be a guide really.

Most gym aerobic machines can work it out for you these days.

OK.... here's a few simple... but easy basics, but you'll love it....
if you want to weigh 120 pounds.... you simple structure your diet to 1,200 calories.
whatever your weight is... let's say you weigh 180 pounds, that means you are at least taking in 1,800 calories at this time. One pound is the same as 3,600 calories. [I wasn't taking in exercises in your calorie intake] So, to go from 180 pounds to 120 pounds you need to cut back 600 calories a day. At that rate it will take you, 6 days to lose one pound. Not taking exercise calorie and water intake loss into consideration. Get it... 600 divided into 3,600.
And, yes, the heavier you are the more wt you lose... or you can wear weight belts and weight vest so as you exercise you burn more calories.
Duke Diet and Fitness Center... The leading experts in the area in the world in NC, USA also states, that a person should... walk or step... 10,000 steps per day in order to maintain a system that will maintain burning calories. Also, no less than 8 glasses of water. And never eat after 7PM. Also a complex carbohydrat will help you stay or feel fuller longer in the evening.
Anyway... I hope that helped..... It helped me to remember it.
We should do a wt. check in like they do the drink tracker... it could be encouraging too.

Yep - If you think about it - it is quite understandable - If you are walking up a hill for example you are lifting your weight against the force of gravity - this requires energy (calories)! The heavier weight you are trying to lift - the more energy you need to do it!

Same for all activities - the more weight you want to move - the more energy you need to use to do it!

As I said - most gym aerobic equipment allows you to enter your weight - and works out the calories you use depending on the time and intensity settings on the machine during your exercise session.

(as for Neil's additional (too much?)information - I guess it would depend on how you were doing it right enough .

So who is gonna be the first to post the Kama Sutra Calorie list

position 1 = xxx cals for the ladies xxy cals for the men
              Position 2 = xxx cals..........

(Not me - been married too long to remember )

              See ya

I sincerely hope you are not considering objectifying men as sex objects!

                      It is SO demeaning!

                        Calorie Burning.

                        1. How does EVERY thread start out so innocent and then turn to SEX? LOL

                        2. There is more to exercise than the simple, how many calories do you burn during...(whatever exercise, sex or not.)

The human body adapts. So, if you are sendentary, the liver only keeps enough glycogen stored to deal with whatever amount of energy is required. Once you start exercising, not only do you burn calories (energy) while you are doing it, your body starts to "figure out" that it needs to store my glycogen for your new lifestyle.

This ends up being a good thing, because if you do more than your liver has stored, your body starts pulling energy from other areas, like your muscles, etc.

Over time, exercise conditions your liver to supply more energy. The muscles GROW and the fat decreases. Growing muscle is good, REALLY GOOD, Star, because muscles require MORE ENERGY (calories) to be maintained. Which means you can eat more every day.

Muscle requires more calories than fat.

This is why it is now recommended that people do aerobic and weight bearing exercise. Aerobic exercise is good for the heart and lungs, weight bearing is good for the bones and muscles.

So, how many calories does one session take? It is some complex differential equation relating to how much fat/muscle you have and how long you have been doing it. I'll leave that to Neil.

The point I am trying to make in my usual rambling way.. Exercise is good for you only if you do it regularly because its benefits are a long term benefit. Your body knows it needs the energy stored up to sustain it and your muscles grow, requiring more energy to be fed and your fat shrinks, because your body needs to use the energy (calories) you eat to keep the muscles strong.

Whew. I can't believe I wrote all that as I am sitting here on my arse not doing anything. But, Hey, I have VERY STRONG FINGERS.

                        Love you, Star,

                            Star,

No. You do not want to injure yourself!!

I would buy the trainers that work best for you.

However, if you keep exercising, I am thinking that you will have lots of trainers looking to help you...... You will have your pick. (Wouldn't that be grand??)

                              Calorie Burning.

                              S,

I guess deep down I knew that as a member of the fairer sex, one of your motivations for going to the gym was bound to be.

"YAY - I can go out and buy shoes!"

As a male - I get by with very few pairs of "everyday" work type shoes.

But - even I as a bloke, have quite a collection of "specialist" shoes for all the different sports I do!

Running shoes for high mileage / training
Running shoes for off road running - two different pairs (different soles for different conditions).
Lightweight Racing "flats" for road racing (half / full marathons)
Rock climbing boots (one "everyday" pair and one for more "technical" climbing
(and about 4 pairs of worn out ones that smell so bad I cant get near enough to them to throw them out
NO - It is not just me - it is the way the boots have to be made to work correctly, and they are worn on bare feet - ask the wife / girlfriend of any climber - our climbing boots are famous!! TMI - I know!)
Mountain walking boots - leather, unlined
Mountain walking boots - light weight fabric, gore tex lined
Mountain walking boots - leather, gore tex lined
Winter Mountaineering boots - plastic for snow / ice
Cycling shoes - Road bike cleats
Cycling shoes - Mountain bike cleats
Martial arts shoes for tai chi - two different pairs
                              Squash shoes (non-marking soles)
and several (3) pairs of different "cross training" shoes used for general gym use / the occasional game of tennis etc.

So - as you can see there are special shoes for EVERYTHING!

the point is - go to a GOOD sports shoe shop and tell them what you are going to be doing and get advice, and get a decent pair of shoes.

You don't want to injure yourself because you skimped on your footwear.

                              Just my tuppence worth!
Well - many hundreds of pounds worth I guess - looking at that list - EEK!

                              Love :l
