    topamax and orgasm

Okay..gotta ask. I have been on the program for 11 weeks and love it! Everything is just like the book said it would be and I give thanks to you and Roberta every day!

I have been wondering however, any chance that one of the side effects of topamax is difficulty in achieving an orgasm? Ever since I have been taking it, it has been more difficult. I haven't seen any reference to that as a side effect in my own research and I haven't brought it up to my own doctor. Maybe I have something else going on! Thanks!

Hi, Moxie. You picked the perfect handle! Just a quick note to let you and other folks know that Dr. G is traveling for a week or so but will be back to answer this and any other questions that come up in her forum. Didn't want you to think you were being ignored is all. Thanks for dropping by. (Everyone is probably anxious for the answer to this one, ey?)

      topamax and orgasm

I don't know if it's ok to do this here, but I had to share. I have the same problem but not because of the Topa, it started way before. I'm sure there's an internet group for that, too, LOL. Anyway I found a post on another board and thought it was really interesting!! Again, hope it's ok to put it here until Dr. Garcia gets back! :eek

I didnt see sexual side effects in the medical info, however, it does effect serotonin. I've been on and off Prozac for years, and the SSRI drugs all have sexual side effects including lower libido and orgasm difficulty. Assuming a link between serotonin and orgasm, your problem makes sense (Im a layman , not a doc, so who knows? ).

            Hi.

Although the literature does not mention difficulty with orgasm as a side effect, the pleasure receptors in the midbrain are blocked and the sexual problem may be at this site. Lower doses of the drug with higher doses of kudzu may reduce the craving and alcohol's euphoric effect without interrupting orgasm, but for some individuals topamax may cause problems regardless of the dose.

Individuals who choose abstinence from alcohol but who need medication should have no problems with the Naltrexone/Acamprosate combo because they are not drinking. Those who select moderated drinking may need to employ increased kudzu, more intensive hypno and extra brain specific amino acids.

Also, remember the importance of nutrition and regular exercise. An individual who starts to slip may need to return to topamax, perhaps briefly, until control of cravings is re-established and other therapy (e.g. change from moderation to abstinence) and the mid brain receptors settle down. Just like a diabetic out of control, use the full court press to get the blood sugar down then modify for the least amount of medication needed. The correct balance of medication and other elements can help avoid sexual problems in many cases.

More research is being conducted in this area to try to find a "Viagra" type solution for women who have problems with orgasm.
