I got the book and the tapes and I am ready to go. But I went to two doctors and they would not prescribe it to me. What do I do? I really want to get started with the medicine. I live in Ft. Lauderdale.

Hi Malaica -- I am in NZ and Topo hasn't been approved as an off-label drug here so I haven't been able to get a doctor to approve it either. I also went to get Naltrazone but would have had to do counseling and the triage person really put me off. It's just not my cup of tea (and he was very condescending). Would only have provided it for 3 months anyway.

Back to the subject! I am determined to conquer this problem and, with the support of my hubby, I ordered the topo from offshore to be mailed to a friend who will mail it to me. I've ordered offshore meds before and have found everything that I've ordered to be top quality. You might try that route. It's a bit more expensive than having insurance cover it but I figure it's cheaper than all the alcohol I've been consuming :-).

I would do as RJ has suggested before -- keep trying doctors until you find one that will help and support you. Failing that, don't be afraid of the offshore meds but I do think it's important to have a doctor monitor you. In my case, my doctor won't subscribe the meds but did say she would monitor me if I were able to get them.

what is "off shores" Canada? here it is prescribe for Migrane and I don't that migranes so I don't qualify.

I am wondering, since I got the book, the tapes and the vitamins, how do I get Topomax? there should be an easier way to do this, but I have never heard from Dr. Garcia here or anybody.

I am hoping I will hear from somebody soon.

Hi, Malaica, Roberta here. I know Dr. Garcia has been busy with patients and her visiting residents but she checks in to the board when she can. I think part of the issue is that some of these questions have been asked by others, so I'm not sure her response will be very different. (Eventually we hope to establish an FAQ--Frequently Asked Questions--section, to address these repeated queries. The primary one seems to be related to patients whose docs are unwilling to prescribe Topamax.)

I'm posting below Dr. Garcia's answers to previous questions of a similar nature. Perhaps you'll find them helpful. I can understand how terribly frustrating it must be to not be able to find a medical professional who will work with you. I get mad every time I read one of those messages! Some providers may be more comfortable prescribing more "conventional" meds, so you may wish to consider plugging them in in place of the Topa. (Keep in mind, the medication is only once piece of the program.) Or you may have to simply seek out another provider. I hope you find these suggestions helpful. Dr. Garcia may be able to offer some additional info as well.

Thank you for your interest in the My Way Out program! It sounds like you have a good relationship with your doctor. I would look at the other medications as discussed on the research forum (acamprosate and Naltrexone) which are currently approved by the FDA for the treatment of alcoholism. She may be willing to prescribe these and used together they can be highly effective.



This is another anti-craving medication and it sounds like you have a very supportive doctor who is more comfortable with this one. I would encourage you to use the My Way Out program and use the Campral working in partnership with your physician. There is a good amount of information in the research area of the website regarding this drug. I would stick with your current doctor and see how things progress.



I'm sure there are a number of clinicians in the Seattle area available to treat you. While I do not have specific colleagues in that community, I would go ahead and start the program in My Way Out and bring the research information as included on the web site to your doctor. If that fails, ask for a referral to an addiction medical specialist and have your doctor help find this individual for you. If they absolutely refuse to assist you in the treatment plan, call the local medical society and ask for providers who treat addictions or specialize in "Addiction Medicine". Continue to see you family doctor for colds and sniffles but find someone to help you with current therapy for the problem drinking issue. Don't quit the process until you find someone.

Hi malaica -
I finally found a site where topamax can be ordered online.
It is called drugdelivery.ca.
I was very frustrated but now that I have placed my order I am hopeful again that this program will do what I have not been able to do on my own.

I too went offshore to buy it, but not from this site. But I know others have ordered from it and were very satisfied. I would say it's fine to go ahead and create an account.
