    Does 1 drink =1 Unit?

    Hi modders and lurkers,

As a soon to be modder (11 days of self imposed AF time left to go) and regular user of the drink tracker I need your guidance please. I have not read the book so I am in the dark as to what is meant by 1 drink. I am also in the UK, so one drink here could vary a lot in terms of units. One small glass of weakish wine might only be one unit, but one large glass of stronger wine could be 3 units. So my question is when filling in the drink tracker or talking in terms of 2 or 3 drinks being a persons self imposed limit, how are they counting this.

I hope this makes some sense. I know what I mean!!!!!

    THanks guys...love Moo

    day 42 AF here!

    Does 1 drink =1 Unit?

As far as I know, "Units" is a UK term. The American habit that still uses ounces or other measures.

Unit of alcohol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This site indicates that US units are nearly twice as big as UK units. And I'm scheduling a trip to Japan this fall; coincidence?

    Standard Units Table

For me it's a bit easier to measure by bottle. Here in the US bottle of wine contains 5 1/2 "drinks". A large (economy) bottle of hard liquor contains 54 "drinks". So I know if a large bottle disappears in a week, then that's a lot of liquor. Right? Hmm, blame it on the dog.

Here is a link to a worldwide unit calculator.

    Units of Drink Calculator

The very last sentence on this page is pretty funny...

    Notes on Measures - 6

Here's a tag from the end:

    Container Size-mL Contents %AbV Units(UK)
    Tumbler 225 Cider 5.3 1.2
Large Wine Glass 175 Red Wine 15 2.6
Large Wine Glass 175 White Wine 12 2.1
Small Wine Glass 125 Red Wine 15 1.9
Small Wine Glass 125 White Wine 12 1.5
    Half Bottle 375 Red Wine 15 5.6
    Third Bottle 250 Red Wine 15 3.8
    Half Bottle 375 White Wine 12 4.5
    Flute 100 Champagne 12 1.2
    Can 440 Beer 5 2.2
    Pint Beer 5 2.8
    Glass 90 Port/Sherry 20 1.8
    Liquer Glass 40 Liquer 40 1.6

Now at any time we can write out an audit, like this:
    When What Units Daily
    Sunday lunch Half-bot.White
    Liquer 4.5
    1.6 6.1
    Monday lunch
    evening 2 ? Cider
    Half-bot.White 2.4
    4.5 6.9
    Tuesday lunch 2 ? Cider 2.4 2.4
    Wednesday lunch 2 ? Cider 2.4 2.4
    Thursday lunch
    evening 2 ? Cider
    Third-bot.Red 2.4
    3.8 6.2
    Friday lunch
    evening Pint Beer
    Third-bot.Red 2.8
    3.8 6.6
    Saturday lunch
    evening 2 ? Can Beer
    Third-bot.Red 4.4
    3.8 8.2
    Weekly Total 38.8

It is 10 units more than the UK *official* recommended weekly intake. Which is a 37% increase.
And that from someone who considers he is a moderate drinker!
Perhaps he could declare himself an honorary citizen of Australia where it would only come to 30 units. Or (even better) the USofA to get down to 22 units?

I only drink wine these days, 5 oz = 1 drink, 1 bottle = 5 glasses. That;s what I record on Drink Tracker.
My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.

        Hiya Moo,

Vlad posted about this website Drink Aware last year sometime and I found it really usefull as it calculates exactly how many units a glass is as well as taking into account the AL %.
