    Who takes Topamax?

I just got my MWO book yesterday, I am very interested in trying Topamax because not only does it seem to help curb alcohol cravings, it seems help other problems that I suffer with, such as OCD, losing weight, and I even read where it can help with nicotine addiction. I need help in all of those areas.

I just dont want to take it and turn into a complete idiot and not be able to think and speak properly. My job requires a good memory and I have read about the side effects of feeling "confused" and "dopey"

Just wondered if you could tell me some of your experiences, for those of you who are taking it....................Does it really work?:thanks:

I take topamax, but at a very low dose, only 50 mg per day. I don't feel any more confused and dopey than usual. I don't have any alcohol cravings. But then I was really ready to quit. I think your motivation has a lot to do with it, as I have tried and failed in the past.

      Hey Wally,
I have three bottles of Topamax, 50mg and 100mg....but the expiration date is 2008 (original RX is 2007) what do you think? I guess I can try it and see if it helps. I'm not refilling anything because of my insurance issues.

I take topamax....200mgs a day. I also take Wellbutrin 300mgs a day. I think it helps. Because without it I crave daily. But, I still think the majority of the work comes from within me. I used to drink daily...I have had slips, but I also have some isses that needed to be worked on that have nothing to do with alochol.

50 mg per day, no real side effects, definite significant help with cravings, but as part planned plan to stop with all sorts of lifestyle changes and motivation and goals at the same time.

            Topa

I have been on Topa for about 3 weeks now and I had the same concerns.
At the start, the cravings did NOT go away, so do not get discouraged! But now at 3 weeks, they ARE going away and I am up to 50 mg in the AM and 50 mg in the PM. Give it time to work. The nauseua side effects finally wore off after about 2 weeks and now it is cool. I am down to about 3 beers a night and I know that I will be AF soon. A little fuzziness to start with, wbut it faded away very quickly.

Hi UncleGeorge - I guess it depends on your goals. Presumably you do not intend to take Topamax forever and during this three months you've probably made adjustments to your lifestyle and behaviour right?

The changes you've made are the main thing and the Topamax is the little bit of the iceberg that pokes out above the water right? In which case if you stop the Topamax you should continue your new lifestyle.

I am in the same position as you although I haven't read the MWO book and instead had four sessions with an addiction specialist doctor who prescribed Topamax at 50mg per day.

I have been AF for about three months and am about to stop the Topamax, my doc suggests I go down to 25mg per day for about five days before stopping altogether.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

My main motivation is health and in the short term thats linked to weight loss, I have another 4KG to go before I am at my optimum weight and drinking and being fit don't go together so I think I'll be okay.

                Vanity might actually save me.

I've been around MWO for a couple of years now, and find it interesting that none of the senior members have responded to this. So how about it?
