    Weight loss after menopause

I have moaned many times to my friends here that even though I have gotten rid of lot of alcohol in my diet, I have not lost weight. Over the past few years I have cut back my calories, but have not lost weight in spite of my pretty high activity level. Today I found the article at this link:
Everyday Fitness with Dr. Pam Peeke: Minimize Your Menopot
which gave me new insight and ideas to try. I'm gonna do this! I WILL lose 10-15# before the end of 2009. Anyone want to join me?

    Sunbeam,

    :thanks:

I cut and paste the list into a Word doc and put it on my desktop.

Now I can read it daily and get myself motivated.

      Weight loss after menopause

I'm going to make a chart of the strategies I'll be using from this article, so I can check them off daily. I will post my weight weekly, on Monday I guess. Today I am 145#.

        Hello Sunbeam, Cinders-

I'd like to join in! I'm age 54, and 145#s. Monday weigh ins sound good. If we can keep each other on track as to staying sober, we can help each other with this too. Yeah, I thought I'd lose weight cutting out the extra 600-900 calories per day but it hasn't happened.

There's a great site for this too.....womantowoman.com also, google Dr. James Wilson adrenal fatigue, every drinker has shot their thyroid, which is a big non-weight loss problem, and adrenal glands have to kick in, after the thyroid is overtaxed....its really interesting! We did tons of cont. education on endocrinology, and thyroid dysfunction, and adrenal fatigue, after I had reproductive cancer, and travelled to Johns Hopkins, from Texas....surgical menopause at 44 nearly killed me, and sure added to the alcohol abuse situation!

I need to lose weight also. Am 53 and 5'2" and weight 151 - too much. I just received my supplements to reduce my drinking - so I may as well reduce my eating and increase my activity at the same time!

              Hey everybody,
              We have a group!

Texas, I will look at what you have posted. I have read the thyroid info because of Doggie Girl's posts, but I don't have any thyroid symptoms. I was more of a binge drinker, which only occurred in the past few years, so I think my thyroid may not be shot. But there certainly could be people reading this who do need that info, so THANKS! All info is good.

As I gear into this, I will post what I've done to meet the ideas in the article:

I am trying to eat every three hours. This worked yesterday, but today I was busy and forgot to eat in the afternoon: eating for me is more by habit than hunger. So I also did not eat more earlier in the day, but I will keep working on that.

I did eat some nut & dried fruit mix about 10:30 am, immediately after my bike ride. I tend to rest after exercise, but our metabolism is highest right after exercise, so that is the best time to eat. I always have on my shelf a homemade mix of walnuts, almonds, toasted soy nuts and craisins.

While biking every 10 minutes I pushed my pedals harder/faster for 100 counts (about a minute).

I got my 1#weights out of the closet, and lifted them using biceps 10 times, 2 reps, while my husband was finishing cooking dinner (nice, huh? He's great!)

I bought plants at the garden center this afternoon, put two of them in the ground, and moved a third plant to a new spot this evening.

You all will decide what and how often to post.

                Weight loss after menopause

Hi Sunbeam - I thought I posted yesterday - maybe it ended up on a different thread. I'm much the same, 5'2" 152lb and 40% body fat. I too thought that cutting out AL would be a major factor in weight loss, but no, not to be. I've been exercising for a while, but not consistently, am now aiming for an hour of cardio 6 days a week, 3 weight training sessions and 3 Yoga classes. I don't work so have more than enough time. This is important to me now as although I have no desire to be skinny thin, I just want to feel like me again, which I'm sure will help give the confidence to get out into the real world and work again.

I do have issues with my Thyroid, but need a new doc. I've found a doc that specialises in bio-identical hormones, and am working up the courage to book a visit.

I'm really really reluctant to 'diet', I recently donated my huge collection of 'wonder diet books' to the library, but am more aware of all the little 'extras' (open the fridge door, pop a choc brazil, this is ok, - but not ten times a day ) I'm eating, I'm also watching portion size as there's no way I should be eating the same amount as Mr Sweats.

I would be very happy with a consistent 1lb a week, and like having somewhere to post my progress! I'll weigh on a Thursday.

I'm also going to photograph my weight on the scale on a Thursday and send it to my Mom - a little bit of added incentive!

                Cheers all

I'm in. I'm 51 and still in peri-menopause and have been struggling with 15-20 extra pounds over the past few years. I too have given up the desire to be skinny, but I do want to feel like me..I still have a nice shape, I'm 5'6" but peak at 160lb on a bad day. 140lb is perfect for me. Nice to have some company. I'm doing some yoga and trying to walk regularly. I really want to add the weights. I have a nice little setup at home, so I have no excuse not to do what I need to do to look and feel great.

Betty and Namaste, glad to have you join the group. Namaste, I also will be incorporating yoga. I took a gentle yoga class (5 wks) this summer and in 2008. I just did a "sun dog" for a couple of minutes. I am doing everything I can think of to boost my metabolism, often just for a minute within my current routines. Just cutting calories no longer works for me. I joke that I used to be able to drop a few pounds just by switching to lite beer....

                      Weight loss after menopause

Well it's thursday morning here so time to post - 152lb. I'm aiming for 151next week!

I'm really missing my Yoga, I was doing a class about 5 times a week, but my favourite teachers havegone awol, and I just don't click with their replacements. I've started a beginners course with another centre, which you have to do before you can take their classes, so should get going again soon.

I'm also going to see a doc next week who specialises in bioidentical hormones - watch this space!

                        Weight loss after menopause

Yesterday was a good day. Had a nice lunch out with hubby, very vegetative which is easy at this time of year. I guess my theme on this thread is boosting metabolism. During my activities around the house periodically I will take a minute and march in place for 100 counts (about a minute). I include good arm swings. Evening munching is a big downfall of mine, but I just had a little sherbet in a small tea cup. I don't plan to deprive myself, just eat sensibly, mostly high quality foods. I am already pretty good at this, my health numbers are "perfect", I just want to get back into a size 8 instead of 10.

                          Weight loss after menopause

                          Good Morning,
I got on my treadmill yesterday for 30 minutes and watched a painting instruction video, which was my goal. I feel pretty good about that, but my snacking and drinking was not so good. I've just come back to MWO a week or two ago so I'm trying to get my footing back. I started the topamax last week and am titrating to 50mg today. I'm hoping that will help the drinking, which will help the snacking. Some life style changes going on as well, so it may take me a few weeks to find my rhythm. Today, I hope to do the treadmill again and spend some time with the dumbbells and do a few yoga moves. Salad for lunch.

                            Sweaty Betty,
There are some really good yoga videos out there. One of my favorites is an old one that Ali McGraw produced..it's beautiful and fairly basic. I like doing it at home. Just a thought. Oh, and I'm on the bio identical hormones. I found a female doctor that specializes in optimal aging. I'm on a very low dose and it has seemed to help my symptoms...it is a process. We'll eventually measure the hormones and adjust them even more if needed. Right now I'm on a combination of estrogen/progesterone/testosterone.

                              Thanks Namaste,

I do have some DVD's, but lack the motivation to practice at home, I like going to class, I like that I'm not bothered how much or little I can do, I like that I might not be so flexible, but I'm strong. I'll dust them off and have a go as I can feel my hamstrings tightening!

It's funny though, I was putting on make-up this morning and was trying to get my head around being 41. I just feel about 17? I thought that being 41 would mean that I felt 'grown up' and be able to walk in heels and manage my bank account. I'm still waiting

I've been more consciously active (less screen time) and not too bad food wise, I have my mother on board (curse/blessing?) and just want a 1lb loss

                              Go Ladies!

                              Bets.
