    Drinking Poems

This poem was written to me and my brother a few years ago... I would like to see any other poems along these lines. Still hits me to this day...

    The Bottle

    Sit down with your bottle
    Relax, have a drink
    Tell him your thoughts
Tell him all that you think.

    He?s all dressed up
    With sparkles and ice
    He?s ready to listen
    He?s full of advice.

As you tell Him your day
    And the night trickles by
    He?ll be there for you
He?ll be there when you cry.

    He?s loyal and sure
    And He takes away pain
    He?ll make you feel numb
    ?Fun times? He?ll proclaim.

    He?s legal by law
    With plenty of pride
    He has plenty of friends
They all stand by His side.

    He?s a Devil disguised
    Through his grimacing smile
    He?ll sit there and listen
    And laugh all the while

    But you never can see
Through His tall glass so bright
    Then with few passing hours
You?ll be out like a light

And each night will be gone
    Each day spent with Him
    You thought Him as kind
    You thought Him a friend

    Then suddenly time
Has been left in the dust
    What happened to me?
    Blame something, I must.

    Time spent with your kids
    Is there but not true
They are there, but your not
They can see Him in you.

    And time will soon tell
Whom you chose to see more
    Bottle or Life?
    It becomes such a chore.

    No matter at all
    To your bottle, so blank
?It?s not My fault,? He?ll say
    ?I?m only a drink.?

    ?Both your Grandpa?s loved Me
    With Me life they spent
At what cost, I don?t care.
I don?t care where they went.?

    ?Your Uncle loves me
    His life?s wasted away
    He?s still telling Me thoughts
To Me, He?s devoted each day.?

    ?So I will not subside
    I?ll keep coming around
    I?m a soldier of pride
I will stand my own ground.?

    ?You can throw me out
    On other?s tables I?ll sit
I?ll just spend life with them
    Cause I never will quit.

    ?You Can put me away
You Can feel what you should
You Can see with your heart
You Can decide Life is Good!?

    ?But it is Your choice
    Life is Your own lotto
    This game is Your life
    And I?m only a bottle?

          A Sign

I drank a little wine last night
          It tasted bitter sweet
I felt it numb my mind at last
          And then I fell asleep

Woke up today with pounding head
          My belly rumbled too
I grabbed my water, chugged it down
          The thirst would not subdue

I made a promise to myself
          The millionth one this year
That I would stop the cycle now
It seemed to be so clear

But as I made my meal tonight
I glanced at my ruby red
It called me faintly, then it screamed
          Damn voices in my head

I asked myself to surf the urge
I paused, stood still and thought
Can I halt myself this once
          My answer was "Why not?"

Each and every time I win
          And not give into wine
          I gain a little self-respect
I must take it as a sign

Life is full of ups and downs
I can choose to live it spaced
Or see each day through sober eyes
          With clarity and grace

Just put that one together... for MWO ... LOL

I do this for my children, my grandchildren, my health, my peace of mind, and mostly for the opportunity to learn to live with my true, unfiltered, clear-headed, vulnerable self.

I wish I could drink like a lady
I can take one or two at the most
Three and I'm under the table
Four and I'm under the host

              The Guy in the Glass

              by Dale Wimbrow, (c) 1934

When you get what you want in your struggle for pelf,

And the world makes you King for a day,

Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,

And see what that guy has to say.

For it isn't your Father, or Mother, or Wife,

Who judgement upon you must pass.

The feller whose verdict counts most in your life

Is the guy staring back from the glass.

He's the feller to please, never mind all the rest,

For he's with you clear up to the end,

And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test

If the guy in the glass is your friend.

You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,

And think you're a wonderful guy,

But the man in the glass says you're only a bum

If you can't look him straight in the eye.

You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,

And get pats on the back as you pass,

But your final reward will be heartaches and tears

If you've cheated the guy in the glass.

                    Drinking Poems

I told my sister I dug up her poem. She had totally forgotten it. She rewrote the poem so it could be applied to anyone. Here it is...

                    The Bottle

                    Sit down with your bottle
                    Relax, have a drink
                    Tell Him your thoughts
Tell Him all that you think.

                    He’s all dressed up
                    With sparkles and ice
                    He’s ready to listen
                    He’s full of advice.

As you tell Him your day
                    And the night trickles by
                    He’ll be there for you
He’ll be there when you cry.
