MUSCLE DAMAGE New Scientist Part 2

Received email from my friend tonight which sheds a bit of light on infformation that was missing from the NS article. Have copied it below. This person is going to get a Nobel prize one day. Hopefully while she's still alive. Nah, that only happened to Mme. Curie. Sorry, I digress. Read on.

Nice to hear from you. Oxford hasn't been all that chilly this
winter, except for a couple of really cold snaps of a few days here and
there - including a major (by Oxford standards, i.e., actually stayed
on the ground for a few days) snowfall last week.
Re: the New Scientist article - the chances of me being anywhere
near a newsagent to buy it, and actually having the time to read it are
vanishingly small, but I can give you a quick run down of the current
    state of acetaldehyde research:
It is believed to be the major player in alcohol related muscle
wasting. Currently it would appear that short-term damage is reversible
but longer -term is not. A whole lot of foods have trace amounts of
acetaldehyde which does us absolutely no harm whatsoever as we have
very efficient systems for getting rid of it - it only becomes a
    problem when:
    1. we totally overload these systems - such as by major alcohol intake
where the amount of ethanol converted to acetaldehye starts to exceed
the ability of the metabolism to get rid of the acetaldehyde, so it
hangs around for longer and starts to do damage.
    2. Indulge in pastimes which raise the local concentrations of
acetaldehyde - the classic examples of this being smoking and drinking
which significantly raise the concentrations of acetaldehyde in the
mouth and oesophagus. This is thought to be a major risk factor in
mouth and throat cancer. Which is where we come to your reference to
chewing gum. I'm guessing your NS article was referrring to a recent
Finnish development, now in clinical trial (I think), of a slow
release-cysteine chewing gum which mops up excess acetadlehyde in the
mouth - the hope being that it will reduce the mouth cancer risk for
    smokers and heavy drinkers.

    Hope this has been helpful

      Rags
Thank you very much for posting this; I bought the NS and had a read - very informative and at the same time depressing! Is there any way to check if you have such damage? Onset of cancers?! I have a weird story that scared me and I'd love to be able to get checked out; guinea pig at some uni perhaps? I don't mind!:H

        Dear Blondi,
I have no idea. My suggestion would be to take the article or this post to your doc and ask. There will be a test to measure the amount of acetaldehyde, but I assume it would be a fairly specialised test, which may not tell all that much. I don't know if there's a test for antibodies to check for mouth and throat cancer. If you're worried about mouth cancer, go see your dentist. If you're concerned about any other cancers, see your doc.
If you are near a uni that does medicine, maybe give them a ring and see if you can speak to a prof. or maybe go through your GP. He/she would probebly be able to get through the red tape a bit easier.
        Hope this helps
        Fran

          thaks Rags

That article was (as others have said) informative and depressing! No wonder my back hurts all the time, my muscle tone is "not there" even when I lift weights and all that stuff:sigh: I wonder if I will ever get the acetaldehyde out of my system!?? :eeks: Peretty scarry stuff!

Thanks just the same, the more informed we are, the better!!

          Love ,

          Mary Anne:h

You can buy cysteine tablets which I have been taking. That is what they are making the gum out of mentioned in the article. It is an excellent detoxifier and cleans the acetylhyde out of your system. I love the stuff......

interesting subject. I too take a GNC product called "NAC 600 & Glutathione 100"
which contains600 MG of N Acetyl Cysteine and 100MG of Glutathione. I try to take three per day...it has
              other health benefits too.

                cysteine

                Hey everyone,

Anyone know if the cysteine will help improve muscle tone? Does it just get rid of the Acetylhide?? How long does it take to get out of the system if you just don't drink? Anyone know that? I guess I could ask my doc!!??( He doesn't really know that much about alcoholism though! )

Anyway, enough rambling for now!! Love you guys!!!!!:h :h
