    ignorant doctors

After years and years of trying to get help from various doctors, ive finally made a giant step foward.

I decided to go through socal services (risky i know, but its paid off)

Starting monday 21st of may, im going to do a 7-10 day detox program, under close supervision and then going on campral.

I understand that after the detox, its up to me to help myself and meet the campral half way.

i dont know what to expect during the detox period,
anyone know how it works and how it will effect me?

I'am so excited and cant wait to get started.

    any advice would be valued

( co,incidentally this has all happened within a month of finding this excellent site,)

so happy and looking foward to a new life without the poison.

    all the best to everyone.

        Hi Brightfield,
Great news, I know a little about detox, it usually involves short term use of
drugs such as chlordiazepoxide ( for anxiety symptoms) lots of counselling
You may feel a little agitated, jittery, it really depends how much you drink.
Often group therapy, which is a lot like mwo, only your speaking to rather
        than typing to people.
I do know it works if you put your heart and soul into it.
And then it is up to you with the campral.
You can do it, you will be so much healthier and happier for it.
        Love Paula x

Hi Brightfield, fabulous news!! I haven't done the detox, but I am on my sixth week of a relapse management group therapy course (through the NHS) and it is very good. It is all about education and support. This particular course you can do whether you are abs or not (there are others that you can only do if you are abs) and a lot of people stop drinking whilst on the course. I will be going to my seventh meeting tomorrow night and it will be my 15th day without a drink so all is good. This particular NHS drug and alcohol unit has also organised me a phsycologist and an occupational therapist. I can also have couple therapy if I want to and there are groups that do art therapy and free acupunture sessions as well.
So yes, I am lucky too to have found a valuable resource.
Good luck to you for your detox and follow up programme.

          All the best
          Amelia

                          Bright, that is brilliant!

I have never heard a bad thing about a detox clinic. I am probably not "bad" enough for one but sometimes I wish that I was, just so I could nail this problem properly, and a detox clinic sounds like it would seriously help take stock of the situation.

Good luck my friend. You sound like you're ready for success!

                              Thanks Paula,
Just wanted to make it clear to anyone else over here in the UK, the process I had to go through to get these resources.
I actually went to my doctor when I was drinking 3 - 4 bottles of wine a day. He was mortified (obviously) but wouldn't (couldn't) prescribe topamax - they just don't know about it. So he referred me to the local drug and alcohol treatment centre. Now I know a lot of you may be reserved about confessing all about your drinking history to your doctor, but the drug and alcohol treatment centre keep your doctor fully informed of your progress. So if you complete treatment and continue to be sober, the doctor has that on file.
There is a waiting list for all of the services (except the free acupuncture), but they offer so many back up support measures that it is worth the wait. I am seeing my occupational therapist tonight, I have my group tomorrow night and phsycotherapy on Wednesday night so it is quite full on, but good.
If you are in the UK, you too could tap in to this resource. It is worth giving it a go.
                              Best wishes
