View Full Version : Swelling under right ribcage?

May 12th, 2007, 07:08 PM
ok, to make a long story short...for years now I've had this swelling under my right ribcage that has been mostly pronounced when I'm binge drinking. I've been AF for more than two months now and it's gotten better but periodically comes and goes even still...damn! whish it would go away. Been to doctors and they have no idea and say not to worry.
After a big meal when I push on the area with my hand it makes a "squish" noise...what the heck?

Anybody have any insight on this?

If you have been to a doctor then I am sure everything is fine, but that is darn annoying. Have they specifically checked for a fatty liver? Most of the time docs do the most basic blood work and testing they can, and we need to ask for what we want. If it really bothers you I would ask about that.

thanks Lushy, I think I'll push the point a bit more at my next checkup on the 21st. Yes it is annoying so we'll see....

May 13th, 2007, 06:44 PM
Hey D,
That is the location of your liver- have you gotten your actual liver enzymes checked? Make sure you ask specifically when you have blood work done. Get a full checkup. I am sure you'll be fine but it does make sense that it is more tender or hurts more after bingeing. Drink a ton of water with that garlic hon.

Also, try to get this moved to general so more people see..a lot of people have had this problem.

Its funny that you brought this up Determinator, I have the same feeling in the same place and it has been months since my last drink. All my test came back ok ( very little liver damage :wow:)

I think my innards are rejecting the good things it recieving now. My docter also said not to worry.

very interesting...a lot of people have this swelling and sometimes dull pain, yet doctors are poopooing it. ???? I KNOW something is wrong dang it!
yes, HappyC I got the full bloodwork more than once and it's coming back fine. I'll put a thread directing people here from general I guess. Don't know how to move the thread per se. Thanks all. The fact-finding goes on!

May 14th, 2007, 04:44 AM
D...if the blood work shows everything is fine, then it probably is, but if you are concerned...make an appointment to discuss just that issue...nothing else. Run the labs again and get a scan...that should help put your mind at ease.

May 14th, 2007, 10:40 AM
The only time I had a weird "pain" in my liver was when my daughter decided to use it as her pillow for 3 months. You're not pregnant are you?

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Kidding aside....get the bloodwork done to rule out things. Then if it still bothers you - I would get an ultrasound done of that region. Doctors have so many patients that sometimes you have to be your own doctor and push certain procedures to be done (in a nice way of course). For your own peace of mind.

May 14th, 2007, 11:33 AM
Hello D,
I have that same dull pain under my right rib, my last blood work looked fine, I did the ultra sound about three years ago and they found nothing wrong, but I would still go in and have it done if I were you.

Our poor liver is probably letting us know it is way over worked, so lots of water, and liver friendly herbs like milk thistle, dandelion root, and I have heard good things about lecithin.

May 14th, 2007, 03:24 PM
D, are you sure that lovely wife of yours hasn't been sucker-punching you in the middle of the night? After all, she is the Determinatrix!!

Just kidding my friend - hope that it is nothing....

May 14th, 2007, 03:32 PM
that's it! the midnight gut punch! and I thought it was indigestion. :)
good stuff guys, I'm doing the milk thistle and lecithin-choline and should be taking dandelion but forgot...thanks KKat. The "squish" noise it makes when I press there just creeps me out...??? seeing the doc on Monday.

May 14th, 2007, 06:00 PM
D~you can actually hear it-or "internally" hear it? wow....
Glad you're not putting it off any longer b/c I remember you mentioned this awhile ago. Good luck~I'm sure it's just a huge accumilation of garlic, that's all.;)

May 14th, 2007, 06:03 PM
Just a thought....have you had your gall bladder checked out?

May 14th, 2007, 06:06 PM
Maybe it's an ulcer

May 14th, 2007, 06:14 PM
D - I, too, recall you mentioning this quite a while ago as well. Glad you are going to the Doc soon. It may be nothing but having it checked will give you some peace of mind.

May 14th, 2007, 06:30 PM
yes, it makes an audible squish noise! eeeeek.
could be gall bladder but it feels pretty big. will find out soon.

May 15th, 2007, 09:27 AM
I had the gall bladder scan and I did have stones. I remember the pain but not a squish sound.
Gall bladder is tucked way up under you liver and may cause pain, light yellow poo and general yucky feeling. Simple outpatient surgery to remove it. You'll feel better in a year or so! LOL!

May 17th, 2007, 08:05 PM
Doc says it's probably my gall bladder good call Lorelei. running a crapload of tests in the morning so we'll see soon what the heck is going on....me hopes. Overall fit and healthy tho...yeah!

May 17th, 2007, 08:55 PM
Hellooooooooooo! I think that is what I said!

I hope everything goes well for you D! After your battery of tests you will know and deal.

May 17th, 2007, 11:25 PM

May 18th, 2007, 11:00 PM
eeeeew! giving me the creeps you guys.

wow SBelle, sounds like quite a bounty!!!

May 28th, 2007, 10:07 AM
got the results back from my blood tests and came up with some disturbing things.
triglycerides are too high
LDL cholesterol is too high
Blood sugar is too high (not diabetic but getting there)
Testosterone is in the very lowest part of normal

wow! that blows! especially considering my healthy diet.

my doc expected that the swelling under my right ribcage would be most pronounced after long periods of not eating (first thing in the morning) but it's the opposite. I get the swelling and squish noise only after eating. what the heck is going on? any ideas?

May 28th, 2007, 11:41 AM
Did he do a liver function test? Did he have any other ideas as to what it could be? Seems like he should have done more testing to determine what it was....

I am surprised at your results too considering your healthy diet. Sometimes it is the genes we were born with and there is not much we can do about it. Keep us posted.....

That does not sound good at all, I would get a second opinion

May 28th, 2007, 12:25 PM

I am still watching this post since I have the same thing. While I was in detox in Dec.,Every blood test that was available was done sometimes twice a day with xrays. Doctor said my liver was surprising good considering the amount of alcohol I had been consuming over the years. I was severely dehydrated but what do you expect when blood level going in was .387:ouch:

I am having my problem after I eat also. Especially after a fatty meal ( I love my deep fryer) and after I have my sweet attack. After researching on line and talking to people, I am wondering if I am starting to have gall bladder problems. I am going to try (LOL) to adjust my diet to see if it makes a difference. I already have an appointment in July to see my Dr. so I guess I will know something more then.

We will keep each other posted;)

May 28th, 2007, 12:32 PM
sounds like a swollen liver. what are ur alt/ast levels. have u done an abdominal ct-scan?

May 28th, 2007, 12:44 PM
I was going to suggest gallbladder also but the doc should have done a test for that if he had any common sense, right? D, I think you need more testing......

May 28th, 2007, 05:31 PM
more testing indeed... CT scan will be next. yes, twice now liver function/enzyme has come out perfect (whew!). Julie, you an me are in the same boat it seems...we can't be the only ones with this...?? I do feel better when I eat smaller meals and the swelling has been greatly reduced since I've stopped eating like a wild pig that smoked a doobie. Off to learn more. BTW a big thanks to you all for the input and help....most appreciated :) we'll get this figured!

May 28th, 2007, 09:41 PM
yep gallbladder. but please oh please get it checked again
my man gets this feeling sometimes when he eats fatty foods, even cheese. but he won't go to the doc.

May 29th, 2007, 07:56 AM
This is very interesting. I too have been having a mild/dull pain on my right side both front and back around the rib cage area which I find most pronounced when I have a bath?? I was doing research and it ALSO suggested gullbladder. Is gulbladder damage associated with drinking??

Ok I have a little insight into this since I have to see a Chloresterol specialist. You triglycerides being high is not a good thing ingeneral. If you are drinking at all it will be abnormally high which in turn will raise your LDL. Testosterone will be damaged over time in men from long bouts of drinking but will eventually bounce back. Simle Fish Oil will bring your Triglycerides back in line.

Ok here is unfortuneately a very bad thing to bring up that you dont want to hear. Just because your liver tests have come back fine doesnt mean squat. Unless you are in cirrohsis those tests wont detect much or if you are actuively drinking. In order to detect any liver damage a CT needs to be run on the liver or even an ultrasound.

I have a Fatty Liver from being Overweight... and Drinking.
I have high Chloresterol from Herididity
I have high Triglycerides from Drinking.

Unfortunately it can be two things.. .the pancreus or the gall bladder. Both are active at the time during and shortly after eating. A EF test (Ejection Fraction Test) on your gall bladder is the ony 100% full proof way to tell if it is the issue. Blodd test are only about 15% accurate yet the idot doctors still do them first. My wfie went 4 years with a bad gall bladder until a doctor with more than half a brain ran an EF Test the first time we saw him as it is 100% reliable and found the gall bladder bad.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

May 29th, 2007, 08:40 PM
Thanks for sharing that Hablur.

I had no idea that the blood tests were not reliable.

Do you get gall bladder problems from drinking?

May 29th, 2007, 10:45 PM
wow! thanks Hablur, and I'm also curious about Nancy's question

May 29th, 2007, 11:07 PM
isn't the pancreas on the other side of the body? I don't remember even taking biology...d-oh

May 30th, 2007, 09:19 AM
Drinking can readily cause damage to the liver, the kidneys, the pancreas, the stomach, the intestines, the heart, the brain, the gall bladder... well you get the point. The pancreas is located below the gall bladder and the stomach and is about 6 inches long. It regulates glucose in your blood and also helps regulate the acid in the duadnum. It actually does a bit more but I forget all that it does :) Since it is 6 inches long it fits nicely on both sides of the body and is pretty much centered on the spine.

May 30th, 2007, 09:59 AM
Yes, alcohol abuse can cause inflammation in the gall bladder. I remember once years ago puking after a night of binging & it was green (gross I know). I thought-oh gosh, I'm puking bile. (the gall bladder is the resevoir for bile). All the liver's neighbors get effected by alcohol abuse.

Off topic a little but my sister in law had her's removed due to gall bladder attacks. Her's was not due to drinking but she fit the criteria of the 4F's (a nurse taught us this in school) of people more prone to gall bladder attacks-female, fair skinned, forties & fat. Just an FYI.

June 8th, 2007, 10:51 PM
Hablur, this test you speak of: (Ejection Fraction Test)
is that a blood test or something else?
thanks again,

A c-scan or ultrasound scan will show up gall stones.
My stone was the size of a nickel.
My doc said "you did not cause this by ANYTHING you have done"..

I had told my doc for a couple of years that my side hurts. He STILL put me off for another month soooooooooooo........I took matters in my own hands and made an appointment for a scan. Duh! I got a new doc!
The old one did come by before my surgery to see how I was doing....He is in business with "family", so probably not worried about a law suit.

The "four f's " do apply....

I feel sooo much better since gall bladder is gone...

My doctor told me my pain under the right rib was due to acid reflux and sinus problems so he gave me a nasal spray and some acid reducing tablets.

Stopped taking them now and ache is back even though I am not drinking much at all at the moment.

June 26th, 2007, 11:18 PM
good job Southbell, I'm doing just the same in fact today I picked up my order form for my ultrasound for GB and liver. we'll see in a few days.
