Me too Molls. Once the Church / State coupling was severed - it was a free for all
Who would have thought that Ireland would be so progressive ........ that our Taoiseach ( Prime Minister) would be a gay man AND an immigrant.
Amazeballs.
However I often feel so sad for all those who suffered so much under the rule of the so-called holy Catholic Church. Babies, children, women.
I'll stop now because I may blow a gasket just thinking about it!

Greetings from the west. Up a ladder painting ceiling. Horrible job. Great news about Joe. As Techie said puts everything in perspective. Enjoy every day ! Cousin visiting tomorrow and SIL coming to help, women power.

Re: February Army Thread
Evening all,
Working from home today, picked up a second job, just an ad-hoc thing for my uni as a student advisor on inclusivity but its a little extra cash and a chance to make a difference. Lecturers are on strike tomorrow which might impact some news I'm supposed to be getting, I don't exactly thrive on uncertainty so there's a lot of stress around that, but a friend came over with my favourite cookies (they have mini eggs in them for easter) so that was a bright spot for me. Enjoying my studies still.
Satz/Molly - I'm glad things have improved where you are, I have a work friend around the same age as you guys, she emigrated soon as she was old enough to leave, has some horror stories from when she was younger, still not a fan of her home country because of it.

Re: February Army Thread
She is Irish Inchy ? Poor girl I wonder what happened to her. i count myself lucky to have escaped with just some mental scars inflicted by nuns.
There were some very very cruel people when she & I were growing up. Mainly those claiming to be 'religious'.
They managed to fool everyone for a long long time and ruined so many young lives..
Thankfully they can no longer get away with abusing kids or degrading women.
It's so much better now - everything is out in the open. Nothing can be hidden.
Bitter & twisted ? moi ? .......... never.

I want to parochial school. Only I lay teacher (Miss Carter) during my eight years. Thinking about Sister Elise and Sister Stevens torments me still!

Yeah, nasty story involving a friend's botched abortion and the delights of a 'religious' small town community, we got to talking about it when one of my other co-workers went on an anti-choice rant completely unsolicited having known me only a couple days - she was 'religious' too.

Re: February Army Thread
Evening all.
Operating on 1 car at the moment, so it's not great. Plus mocks. Plus middle DD is working with me for TY work experience. Shes doing various tours of our plant and people keep coming up saying, you must be Mary's daughter (mini me, minus her many piercings)..
Inchy, you'd be very welcome to defect over here, we are, at last, where we should be. Still a few nutters knocking around but they're in the minority. Or almost dead.
Well done @techie, all those years of endurance training and racing will stand to you now. You sound in good form.

Re: February Army Thread
This thread is pretty addictive, ftr. I can't stop reading, then going back, then rereading, then going back again. Suddenly I'm in a wormhole and the date is 2019.
I'd appreciate it if y'all would start speaking English, though. It gets very confusing. (
I'm kidding, of course.) (Sort of. Not that you should change what you're writing, but half the time I'm just missing it and have to google. That actually makes me happy because it makes me feel sophisticated. But is it disingenuous if I start my posts with, "Mae all!" which is the sweetest good morning, ever. anyway.)
Really interesting that in Ireland you were able to go from what I would consider fundamentalist religiosity to a queer PM. I do know the difference between the Irelands, I think, but obviously have a long way to go. Going to have to google that and catch up.
Always have more to say, but signing off. After best wishes for @techie. Happy and hopeful for you that this will be over soon. And if you can deal with long distance running pains, and toenails falling off...

Language inter cultures is hilariously different
..I usually 'get' Americanism's ...maybe because we get/got a lot of American shows and movies over here...sort of understand the differences...British English also...but back when there was an Aussie thread I used to read but more often than not twas a foreign language to me!!
MAE is a lovely greeting with different time zones!
A pivotal shift here was when the HORRENDOUS scandals of Catholic institutions was revealed here...mother and baby homes...care homes...you name it the clergy went from being an admired superior species to dirt under our shoes...the older generation to us (my mothers) were horrified and within a decade religion became utterly irrelevant...on top of that Irish people generally are a kind gentle race by nature (MASSIVE generalisation of course) and having been subjugated to racism here for 100's of years by other forces we wouldn't allow religious clergy do that anymore...so yeah...lovely free society these days...so sad that so many (particularly women) were hurt by dominance of Catholicism for so long like Inchy's friend
