Just so people know, he is still at it.

I contacted 'Doctor' Phillip Thomas several months ago and foolishly forwarded him some money as a deposit because I had a trip coming up and I wanted to wait until after the trip to start on his 'programme'. I knew next to nothing about baclofen at the time, except having read the Ameisen book and done a few google searches, which is how I found his site. He had a 'special offer' at the time - half the normal price. This should have set off alarm bells, but I was feeling desperate at the time and baclofen looked like a 'way out'. I feel really dumb about all this and can only say I was vulnerable and he took advantage of me.

In the end I decided to see Dr Chick and go the 'legitimate' route. So I emailed 'Doctor' Phill- and again..and again..and again. Half a dozen times, asking for a return of the deposit. In fact I was willing to forgo it but when I did not so much as receive a response or a note to the effect that deposits were not refundable I realised I had been conned good and proper.

This man's web sight is still up and he is still advertising his wares out there - and I assume, still conning gullible people like me. Gullible and vulnerable.

    His website is at: baclofen4alcoholism.com

There is an advert for his book there too (a link). Oddly nobody here seems to have heard of it.

Stay clear of him. I would not be at all surprised if he lurks here even today. I'm not even sure if he has the right to call himself 'doctor'. He is no longer registered with the GMC.

I know Phill personally. I have met with him in Garstang where he lives. He is, when you meet him, a middle aged respectable looking man who looks like a doctor and is very knowledgeable.

He was suspended from medical practice as a result of being unable to respond to correspondence from a patient over some botox he was doing and the GMC obviously knew he had a drink problem so it then got worse and they struck him off the register because he was so fargone that he couldn't reply to them.

He got onto baclofen, got himself better and set up Baclofen4Alcoholism. He offers a program where he advises people over the phone and email. That's about it.

The problem he has is that for some reason he comes across really badly. I can't quite figure it out because, personally, I like him and we get along. You can get the same help here for free and the general complaint about him is he shouldn't be calling himself a "doctor". I don't know why he does it and I think he is really tempting fate. He was a genuine doctor and a very knowedgeable one but technically, I don't agree with him using that term because it does give the impression he is still on the register. Some people have come here who understand the "register" and say that a doctor doesn't have to be on it anyway.

We went through a patch where he pulled out the stops and really helped us so I have a particular soft spot for him and consider him a good friend. I am sorry people have had a bad experience with him and I can't understand why this happens but he is one of the most knowledgable people around in terms of baclofen use. haven't spoken to him for a year or more so maybe things have gone south for him. Who knows. Good brain, poor bedside manner, lousy businessman maybe.

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

That seems to be a widely held view of him. He seems to bring out strong and mainly negative emotions. I suppose particularly if he has money you paid him and he hasn't returned it. Not sure what to say. He always spoke to me. He frequents a pub just off the High Street at the bottom as you go down and to the right. Can't remember the name but I am sure you could find him and ask him for your money back. I can't figure out why he would not pay it back. Maybe he's broke and has spent it.

Why should you figure out why he didn't pay it back? There are several references to his crooked and criminal behaviour here and elsewhere once you start to do a bit of googling. There is even a reference on one of his feedback messages on the website you put together with his help.

    Spent it??

    He should pay it back.

I am not defending him and have no association with him so I am sorry he has let you down. He just happened to offer to write some content for my site, which was better than what I had written myself because, at the time, I knew nothing about baclofen and was only interested in creating a site to get a prescription, so I was grateful of the help. Everyone here who has been here for a while knows Phill. He was banned from this site. Like I said, I had a good experience of him but no one else seems to have had that and he didn't charge us anything so I can't figure it out and it saddens me he has let himself get this reputation.

Otter, he is entitled to use the term "doctor" even if he is not registered with the GMC & no longer practices. All medically qualified people have a dual degree - either MB BS or MB ChB - so are entitled to be addressed as doctor the same as those with a doctorate in philosophy or anything else.

I'm nitpicking here, I know! But the GMC can't take away your academic qualifications even if it removes your license to practice!
