Doctors in UK who will prescribe Baclofen

My partner is an alcoholic and despite 2 stints in rehab and several years in and out of AA is unable to get into long term recovery. I have recently read Dr Amiesen's book 'The End to my Addiction' and have been on the internet finding out more about Baclofen. It would seem that it won't be too long before it is a licenced drug in France and the Dutch are carrying out soon to be completed research. However, would I be right in thinking that some people in England have managed to find a GP who will prescribe? I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone in the Norfolk and Suffolk area but anyone that can help I would be really grateful.

hi Dr Jonathon Chick prescribes Baclofen after a consultation. He's based in Edinburgh and also does clinics on Harley St, London. I travelled to him in Edinburgh for my first appointment some years ago but now see him in London. He's ?250 per hour for a consultation.

all of his contact details can be found on this page:

Professor Jonathan Chick Psychiatry Consultant, Edinburgh, private hospital specialist.

I don't know that there's any Doctors in your specific area I'm afraid. It is well worth the trip up to see him.

    Hi again,

thanks palladium for adding that additional info. Personally, I used to consume, without drinking socially, about ?140-?160 of beer a month at home. Dr Chick will do 1/2 hour sessions for half the price but a full hour is advisable. After that he will then prescribe for you up to 100mg per day. He will then write to your GP who can put you on a repeat prescription and then you will pay ?8.05 for a batch which will last approx 25-28 days. (282 x 10mg tabs per prescription)

If, as I needed, your husband needs to go much higher than the 100mg prescribed dose, (i went up to 240mg per day, read a lot more about self prescribing first) you can buy additional amounts online. Even buying online will be cheap enough and will be considerably cheaper still than drinking. I think my online bought pills cost me about ?1.50 per day at a maximum and I don't use them anymore as my prescription just about covers my maintenance dose.

    I hope this helps.

Dr. Chick will give a private prescription which will then cost you the usual fee to fill at a chemists. When you renew the prescription, you will have to pay Dr. Chick again for the renewal.

What you need to do is go to your GP and get the GP to prescribe on the NHS. Tell your GP to phone Dr. Chick and talk through it if he has any issues. Your GP could also contact our GP in Scotland via the NHS emails systems because he prescribes in this way and uses other drugs in conjuction with baclofen. He is Dr. Nigel Pexton at Williamwood Medical Centre in East Renfrewhire. You don't need a consultant to do this. Your GP can and should prescribe after speaking to these people. Best of luck.

Thank you all for your extremely helpful suggestions. I have contacted Prof J Chick on behalf of my partner and we are considering going for a private consultation in June. My partner recently relocated to Suffolk following a long stint in rehab, so as to have their continued support, but relapsed anyway. He, therefore, does not have a long-term relationship with his GP and when we approached the GP they refused to refer to a psychiatrist and recommended NORCAS (which had in fact ceased in the area - so she was out of date with her info). We did, however, find the correct local NHS recovery organisation and have had the initial assessment. We are going to approach their GP to see if they will work with Prof Chick. I have to admit to some concern over having to go over the 100mg that Prof Chick might prescribe, and would love to hear from people that have found this dosage sufficient. Please keep the advice coming. Thanks again.

    Hi Burnley.
Sorry to hear that he's relapsed. That was my experience, repeatedly.

I had a lot of trepidation about taking baclofen over certain amounts. At first it was 80 mg. Then it was 140 mg. Each time I kept going because it was working. I suggest following Dr. Chick's instructions and going with the flow. Ya' know? This stuff works.

Doctors in UK who will prescribe Baclofen

    Dear Burnley,

I live in the UK and have seen Dr Chick. But before that appointment I had self-medicated baclofen, from the internet, up to 160mg. I was foolish and titrated up too quickly and had some unpleasant side effects such as severe anxiety/suicide thoughts/depression.

I went to Dr Chick because I knew I was in big trouble mentally and was frightened taking any more self-prescribed tablets.

I strongly recommend that if you can afford it go and see him if you have no joy with seeing another medic who can help. It will make things much easier, also you do not have to have the visit on your medical records if you don't want to.

He did not prescribe me any tablets only because I had a stock at home.

I no longer take baclofen and I have not had a drink for nearly a year. I stopped taking it because I had other health problems and just wanted to try and get my head straight. That said, if the cravings come back I would have no hesitation taking it again and getting a script from Dr Chick.

In my case, I firmly (now) believe that I did not need to go as high as 160mg to stop the cravings, because I was still drinking (albeit massively reduced amounts) of alcohol I really couldn't tell the difference between a craving and habit. So if you do go down the Baclofen route I recommend your partner tries not to drink, however, this is much easier said than done of course.

I wish you both good luck.

    Caro

This site now requires a login, how else can I get Dr Chicks contact details?

Doctors in UK who will prescribe Baclofen

Palladium;1658789 wrote: I imagine that approach would only work if you had a long-standing and jovial relationship with your GP?many alcoholics/addicts don?t?and you just happened to be blessed with Otter?s powers of persuasion.

Most NHS GPs have neither the time nor the inclination to start a dialogue with doctors whom they may never have heard of before?unless you had already consulted with them.

It?s worth a try, of course?but you?ll more likely walk out with a referral to your local CAT/CDT than a prescription for baclofen.

Burnley?has your partner already approached their own GP about this?
No, that isn't the way to look at it. GPs aren't specialists in alcoholism. Dr. Chick is.

First, you go to see Dr. Chick and get him to prescribe. You leave his surgery with a prescription and get it filled. You then have the option of continuing to see him or seeing your GP. Go see the GP and ask/tell him you are seeing the leading specialist in the UK. Tell him that Dr. Chick will speak to him on the phone and discuss the treatment. He will have no choice. If a doctor does not heed the advice of a specialist, it is misconduct and negligent so you can report him to the GMC and see a lawyer and sue him for malpractice. If you had some other treatment for an illness and your doctor did the same, that would be what anyone would do so it isn't right to dismiss the idea so casually.

    Just do it.
