    Healing the US

this is a continuation of a thread conversation I was having with Ringing Cedars. Conspiracy, public demonstrations, a little bit of something for everyone

education is key, and our media and schools being tools of our government are certainly not guiding us with clarity on that front.

here's a great place to start with this video: (please don't be put off by the title if you voted for Obama. be open minded. this guy hated Bush's policies just as much)

Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling:

"I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible For re-election.

The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971...before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc. Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land...all because of public pressure.

Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise. In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.

    *Congressional Reform Act of 2011*

    1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

    2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

    3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

    4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

    5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

    6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

    7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen.

Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

You mean they have to live like the rest of us?

      Novel idea.

Who would run for Congress then? :H

I'm loving this, Det, but how would it pass a congressional vote? I mean, its a perfect idea, it would put them in our shoes, and the votes they place would affect them personally and their families. I think its not democratic that they don't have social security and that they have fabulous pensions. Quoting this again:

        2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

our stairstep to this is voting in an underdog that is universally feared/hated by both of our current political leviathans (Demopulican and Republicrat alike) someone like Ron Paul. I really wish his son Rand would run but he's not ready.

Warren Buffet's advice, as always, is forward-thinking and brilliant.

Call me dense, but, as amazing and common sense as this manifesto is (*Congressional Reform Act of 2011*), I don't understand what it is.

Is it a true proposal out there to be voted on? If so, is Congress supposed to vote on it? And if so, what are its chances of being ratified?

As I said, I think it is brilliant and I will do anything I can to further this proposal. Congressmen/women part of the Social Security system. Hell yes! Love it.

(I will probably come to regret these remarks, but...)

Then maybe the Social Security bashers, the ones who want to sap it of funds, will stand up and look at who is going to suffer from reducing the benefits.

My father, an ex-marine, tells me this info is bunk. Is there a link to the exact bill? Or something that disproves what he wrote to me:

can't believe you would send this, couldn't possibly be from W. Buffett, too many wrongs, He did crack a joke durinf an interview : "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible For re-election.:
But, Congress has been paying into SS since 1983.....
Congress gets their health care from the Federal Employee Health Care system, all federal employees can use this system...
Cost of living salary increases for congressional members have been automatically generated in the past, but some members have been known to voluntarily opt out of it. Members of Congress have not gotten a raise in pay in the last 2 years while the US has been facing hard economic times
Could be other untruths that I haven't bothered to check...

From that link, it looks like it is all bunk to me, except the one quote "I could end the deficit in 5 minutes..."

well, snopes aside, it's time for some serious ground-shaking changes in our govt. time to heed the lucid warnings of our founders and vote out the career politicians, and vote in the statesman. They are few and far between but there are a few. Last night I signed up to become district coordinator for the Ron Paul campaign. I've taken the plunge! no more sitting idly by and complaining when I see the news. I'm taking positive action.

I do like Ron Paul, but he is not my candidate, actually. But he is the most honest politician I have ever heard of. I have listened to him a lot.

I can't get to snopes here but thanks for that link - I did find the congressional differences in the LA Times online, a simple search shut my dad right up. thanks again.
