    Why L-Glutamine works!

OMG this stuff works!! I am on day 3 of a taper reduction, tonight I started feeling panicky, my chest got tight, I was like uh, oh! I am force feeding myself the beers to taper down so concerned I am not drinking enough to taper, anyway, I went and got some L-Glut earlier today @ GNC (btw way BOGO1/2 off), I took a teaspoon under the tongue, by the time I got the container closed my (anxiety?) attack was gone. This was about 2 1/2 hours ago, have been feeling fine ever since. Don't know if I was having anxiety or my body was craving more alcohol, what ever it was, it is now gone, thank goodness.
So thank you for suggesting this, and anyone that doesn't have it, go get it! It will help!!

      Why L-Glutamine works!

It most certainly does Jamie. It helps alcohol and sugar cravings so prevents the sugar binges people are prone to when they first quit alcohol.

Will glutamine help with Opiate type pain killers?

          Hi Jaimie,

Im trying to get off these painkillers, all prescribed by my doctor, and every time I go off for even 36 hrs I run out of energy/air like a tire deflating and cant move even to take a walk. I also get super depressed after less than 48 hrs and dont care about anything at all. Thats just 48 hrs. I cant tell you what I feel like by day 8, the most Ive ever gone. Id rather be on the pills the resat of my life than go thru that torture again. And my back pain is unmanagable. Cant sleep at all from it and also my insomnia which I take Ambien for, destroys my whole life. Can you tell me if the l-gLUTAMINE YOU USED FROM gnc can help me as well as it did you? Were you on opiates as well?

I am trying to bodybuild to get some exercise to make myself stong enough to build a foundation to try quitting again, but even when taking the pills,my energy is still so low that after 15 -20 minutes I feel like I have been working out 2 hours. Been this way for years.Even before the pills. And yes, I take benzos too. So will glutamine help with my anxiety too? AND HOW ARE YOU FEELING NOW ON IT? i HAVE TO ADMIT, IT sounds too good to be true. I am saying a prayer for you right now that it did everything you want it too, so I can recieve your blessings as well from the product. I have a vittamin shoppe and also a GNC where I live but if you used GNC, i want that exact product.

Also, have you ever used melatonin. I used it up to 6mg and it didnt do anything for my insomnia, but gave me bad dreams. I am hearing now from a detox specialist that people can take up to 30mgs per night with no side effects and ot works awesome for people trying to get off all pain killers. Anyone here know about Melatonin in high doses?

          thanks in advance,

I've used the capsules before and never noticed any effect. I got the powder this last time and WHAT a difference. The craving seem to go away within a minute or two if you let some dissolve under your tongue. I am really impressed. I take a teaspoon at a time.
Can you just take the capsule apart and put under the tongue? Is that the same as the powdered stuff?:thanks:

                Why L-Glutamine works!

                Hi Summering

I take a teaspoon of powder in water 2/day---on empty stomach once at 7am and once at 3pm. Research and find the best you can...works like a charm for both sugar and AL craves. Been taking this since last Sept

What is the dosage of the powder l glutamine that you take? Why is it so much better than the capsules? Can't you just take the equivalent dosage in capsules, or is ther more to it than that?

I have done extensive research on L-Glut. At first I wasn’t making any headway as everyone kept saying the same thing: That’s it’s a powerful amino acid proven effective in double blind clinical trials to reduce cravings for alcohol. But no-one was explaining WHY it works so it’s been hard for me to believe that it does work.

Then I came across an article by Dr. Patricia Slagle who explains best why L-Glut is effective. First of all:

                        L-Glut 101:
Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in circulation in our bodies. It is a major fuel source & therefore energy source for the entire body. It is an important fuel for the brain & can provide adequate energy in the absence of glucose (the other major brain fuel). For this reason it is helpful with focus, concentration, memory, intellectual performance, alertness, attentiveness, improving mood and eliminating brain fog & cloudiness. (All the more reason to take it gang!)

This gets too deep medically so in laymen’s terms alcohol may cause exaggerated insulin secretion resulting in severe hypoglycemia (too low blood sugar).

When the blood sugar is low, Glutamine suppresses insulin to stop the further decline of the sugar levels. It also stimulates glycogen (a stored form of glucose) to be released to help increase the blood sugar to normal levels. These blood sugar stabilizing effects may partially explain why it decreases alcohol cravings, as well as sugar cravings. In studies with alcoholics, 2000-3000 mg 3 times daily decreased the desire to drink, decreased anxiety, & improved sleep. It works best given between meals. It has been used for this purpose in daily doses from 6000-15,000 mg in 3 divided doses. Use upon arising, mid-morning & mid-afternoon between meals.

L-Glutamine may be taken on a daily basis, or kept on hand to manage "craving emergencies" in which the powder from half a 1,000 capsule is poured directly under the tongue. Many MWO members have shared this info with each other stating that this works for them when they are undergoing severe cravings.

Giving Glutamine to rats decreased their voluntary alcohol consumption by 34%. When the Glutamine was stopped, their alcohol consumption returned to baseline levels.

Studies using high dose Glutamine have failed to demonstrate toxicity. However Glutamine should be avoided in cases of acute liver failure & kidney failure.

Precautions: Glutamine should not be taken by persons with cirrhosis of the liver, kidney problems, Reye's syndrome, or any type of disorder that can result in an accumulation of ammonia in the blood.

                        To our good health!

                          Hey Samstone

L-Glutamine has also been proven to provide some relief of withdrawal symptoms by increasing the amount of GABA in the brain. I have used L- Glutamine during withdrawals. It by no means takes them away, but when they are really bad, it does take a little of the edge off. It would help me with the shaking and anxiety.

For the eggheads out there here's a study showing oral l-glutamine increases brain GABA levels. The last paragraph just before the references sums it up in just a couple of sentences.

                          Take care

Does anybody know, how L-Glutamine relates to Glutamate, which is cancer feeding molecule on the par with sugar?

                              Lbard,

From what I have read, glutamine is a recursive to either glutamic acid of gaba, and intake of glutamine will move towards balancing these two neurotransmitters. Of course that's all Google research and could be bs, anyone have a history of mental illness try glutamine? I read a study saying elevates glutamine levels are linked to mental illness, and I just started taking some. I have a strong family history of mental illness and don't want this to be the kiss of death.
