    Dixon,

Can't help you with your questions but hope all is well and please be very careful with meds - you can get into trouble fast by being your own doctor.

    Take care

      Dixon,
I've never taken antidepressants but I echo what Jolie said. People can and do die from overdoses. There are lots of safer ways to tackle addiction. Maybe talk to your doctor?

Good to see you Dixon - how have you been? I was asking about you last week. Have you cut down on your drinking? How is that going for you?

Taking a higher dose of meds if you have not cut down or stopped drinking is a dangerous game. Have you spoken to your doctor? As Jolie said, you are not a doctor - do not titrate yourself up or down on meds without consulting a physician. It is very, very dangerous. Best of luck - please keep us posted.

Sounds fairly hairy Dixon - not from knowledge but common sense I think to mess with AD's is pretty damn dangerous (this is from one who stopped them cold turkey like a wally! So do as I say not as I do sort of thing). They are very powerful drugs, I still have side effects 5 weeks later, so I'd imagine taking an incorrect dosage would be equally or even more damaging - just my opinion mind!

A higher dose of an anti-depressant will do nothing for your alcoholism / willpower / cravings. In fact, it will worsen things like existing liver damage, since ADs are metabolised by the liver. If you read the package insert in the vast majority of ADs, you'll see that smaller doses are often advised in patients with impaired hepatic function.

If you're interested in meds to assist you, go and have a look at the various threads in the Meds Forum and baclofen in particular.

Alcohol is a depressant. My understanding is that it prevents anti-depressants from working. As others have said, you should consult your doctor. HTH.

                Dixon,

In my experience taking an Antidepressant did nothing to lessen my desire to drink!
In fact, drinking while taking an AD was just awful.

I found the best thing for me was to get off the AD, start an herbal prep called Amoryn. It kicked the anxiety/depression in a few weeks then I was able to focus on quitting drinking & here I am today looking at 2 years AF next month!

i used to drink because of my depression. I didn't know this to start with until i went to a hypnotheripist who specialised in drinking issues. Depression tablets never helped me while i was drinking. Even the doctor said that they will not help if i'm drinking. Drink is a depressant and it stops the tablets from working. Once you get a hold on your drinking and stop or cut back, the tablets will work wonders. BUT while drinking, you really have no hope. I know, i suffer badly from depression and have done for 16 years.
