I REALLY wish people would not call out 911..

like Colbye did. When it really wasn't that urgent. (She was not going to kill herself - but it sounded like she would...)

To me: 911 means a sort of Life or Death situation.

I said to her in a PM that it's about the "cry wolf" thing. If we do that... it really makes it hard for people who REALLY need immediate help.

OK, so she felt bad, etc. But her subject line was EMERGENCY.

    When it wasn't.

I'm sorry, but that's wrong. It makes it so that someone else who really REALLY needs help... eventually, we won't pay attention.

    Just had to say.

While I love so many on this site, I truly don't want certain people to take advantage of the caring, etc.

    I'm still upset about this.

911 is NOT APPROPRIATE - especially with no explanation... as colbye did.

I don't know her - perhaps she's a young girl who doesn't understand what that means. I can give her the benefit of the doubt... once.

If others want to respond, repeatedly, to (false) emergencies... well. Whatever.

It just does a disservice to others who have a Real emergency.

      Hi Savon,

If you have addressed this with Colbe in a PM then why post again?

people call 911 over cheeseburgers these days?
and some are getting arrested for frivilous calls?
anyone who uses an emergency line 'incorrectly' are being prosecuted.
i believe the right number for help is 411.

        :thanks:

I think I get what he's saying, and alcohol withdrawl can have you panicking about anything. Racing heart, pains, pins and needles, burning sensations, sensitivity to light/sounds and vomitting are all common in withdrawl but also symptoms of other problems.

Can be scary but really emergency services need to know it's real - otherwise someone in a real life-threatening situation could loose out. I've an associate who often has heart, chest, arm pains. He drinks, smokes and uses coke continuously (or whenever he can get it). He's been to A&E a couple of times with these symptoms, they run ECGs and nothing shows up. He then signs himself out before seeing the specialist since he wants to carry on drinking/smoking etc.

So far his Drs advice has been to stop his habits.

About 2 months ago this person had letters from bailiffs since he owed money from way back. He and his friends put pressure on me whilst drinking, I wouldn't help him. He's had plenty of money from me in the past and it never comes back. I also have large bills to pay. Anyway, at a party he "puts on" this panic attack, hyperventilating, going dizzy etc - saying it's because he worried the bailiffs will take his beloved TV from him. At that point everyone looks at me and I cave in. They promised he will pay me back every week at a small amount. So far nothing.

Point of this story is I'm not going to believe a word he says and because of the circumstances I do believe he has been putting these health issues on (or at least exaggerrating).

To add to the above - I'm new here, want to see true emergencies taken seriously, don't want anyone's feelings hurt, and Savon made some valid points that are good to put out in the forum for general awareness.

I am not a "young girl" and I did call 911 and I AM SCARED to death. I am going to the ER again today when I can get a ride, due to this crisis in my life (sober BTW). I am having a great deal of difficulty with insurance issues which makes me a number here in the US. I am getting great help here and right now that is all I have...not "attention".

Good, colbe - I hope you got to ER.

I hope you can get it all together. I'll pray for you-

Please let us know what happens...

Colbe -- You don't need to explain your going to the ER today if you don't want to. That's your business.

I think Savon's message was a bit strident but I do want to comment on the issue. Here's my take on it.

I don't drop in as often as I'd like these days but the other day I was quite distressed to drop in and see someone saying they were calling 911. I saw posts from quite a few panicked people. I'm sure many more did as I did and prayed and kept checking back.

All this has happened more than once on this board in some fashion or another. No one is suggesting (I hope) that someone would post a fabricated crisis. And of course the person in crisis is usually in no position to post updates. Days have gone by leaving me still praying and wondering if everything's ok. It really helps when we get a post from someone close to the person in crisis announcing that things are better.

Perhaps we could try to be mindful that even those who don't express it in a post are distressed when we have a soldier down in the ranks. It would help if someone close to the situation gave the all-clear when the crisis is passed. It's sometimes done but not always.

I ask that this be viewed merely as a suggestion and not a criticism. I don't think anyone has done anything to criticize.

I REALLY wish people would not call out 911..

Savon, I doubt that you or I or any of us, except the person in the midst of a crisis, can determine when it is or isn't appropriate to call 911. Chest pains are ALWAYS a reason to seek immediate medical help. And, as many of us know, depression is also a SERIOUS condition, as it can easily escalate, especially when alcohol is added.

I, for one, MUCH RATHER worry and respond to 100 cries for help only be relieved when the situation isn't as bad as it sounded, than dismiss the ONE that may indeed be life threatening.

For anyone in crisis - be it emotional or physical... please do post - and if you feel that calling 911 is your best option, please do so.

And, Colbe, hun.. I'm home now. Call when you can. :l

I agree, Sunshine - BUT I still say it's Inappropriate to call out 911 here with no message as to how to help.

Perhaps you don't feel as involved as I do... but when I see such "call out's" -- I take rather seriously.

                            I'm thinking that now I shouldn't... and won't.

Her original message was: calling 911...end of rope

Yet... that apparently didn't mean she was going to kill herself. To be honest - I'm disgusted.

You all will know when I'm about to kill myself... no hanky panky about it.

If I say "911.. end of rope" it will mean just that.

It's also very easy to panic as an alcoholic. I do it all the time. Over here we do have a health helpline you can call for advice, 24 hours a day. Very useful but really it's about common sense. There is only so much emergency services can do - i.e. react to true emergencies that they can treat. Other things need to go through Dr referrals - otherwise they would just and up getting involved in complicated cases, that should be dealt with more thoroughly.

Otherwise they would end up being a drop-in centre for all and sundry.
