HSE in pharmacy contingency plan
A contingency plan for dispensing medicines to medical card holders has been put in place as demand increases following the Bank Holiday weekend.
Hundreds of pharmacies withdrew from the medical card scheme on Saturday in protest at the decision to unilaterally reduce their fees.
The Health Service Executive says hundreds more pharmacies are still participating in the scheme and it has also set up temporary facilities to dispense medicines in some areas.
Patients in parts of the country experienced delays today in getting medicines from the temporary centres.
Some pharmacies that were open for business today said they came under extreme pressure.
A number of branches were forced to temporarily close because they could not cope with the demand.
The HSE has said ten temporary outlets set up in the west have coped well with the demand.
In Waterford, some patients wishing to have their medical card prescriptions filled at Boots pharmacy in the city were asked to come back tomorrow.
It is understood that existing clients and emergency prescriptions are being looked after.
Boots is the only pharmacy in Waterford now dispensing to medical card patients.
Members of the Irish Pharmacy Union say they can no longer continue to operate the drug schemes following, what they claim is, a 34% cut in payments.
The HSE said the cut is 24% and is necessary because the schemes cost taxpayers around €133m a year.Ethanol is a toxic chemical, why would I drink it?
