Zeppie very glad to hear you are okay. My immediate thoughts were that you were too far south to be affected but then I remembered that you had started your course. I'm so glad you are okay.

Have spent this arvo with people who commute from ChCh to work in Wgtn - two have managed to get ferry sailings tonight, but others are choosing to stay here and bring there families up. It is heart breaking.

thanks Miss B - it just shows you how fragile we all are. I just wish I could be of some use. I had contemplated training my old dog in search and rescue but in true Zeppie Fashion "never got around to it".

I will certainly look into it for the new pup. the SAR dogs are getting a load of work lately.

Hello troopers. Just logged on a few minutes ago and saw the Zeppie's start to the thread. Good Lord, it's unbelievable what has happened to Australia over the past year. Zeppie - so glad to hear you're okay girlie, and MissyB as well. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this latest tragedy.
Here is a link with pictures showing some of the damage.

Morning friends, Zeppie great to see you safe and starting the thread given the tragedy unfolding in your city. Just looking at the footage, cant imagine what it must be like to live in an earthquake zone, those poor people.

Had to turn the telly off. Just horrible horrible graphic and heartbreaking images of New Zealand. It is good to be informed but I could not watch anymore. Thank God Zep and Miss B are ok. The people of New Zealand will be in my thoughts and prayers today. I have a fellow English teacher at work who's from Christchurch. All of his family are there. Will try to get in touch with him shortly. We were just talking yesterday about him going home for a visit this summer.:l Army-hard to be cheerful this morning but I'm hoping that there will not be anymore aftershocks and they can continue rescue and recovery.

I'm not trying to draw attention to myself here, just want to share something with you.
KTAB, I experienced the earthquake in Athens in September of 1999. Luckily for us, our family, there was no damage caused to our store or our home. However, the building of one of our customers collapsed and several people were killed. A friend of ours lost his business as well due to irreparable damage and a huge area of the city literally collapsed. There were no houses or buildings left untouched in the areas affected. I will never, ever forget the fear of that day. I was standing at the back of our store with four levels of concrete floors above me. When it started, the windows began to rattle as they do when a heavy truck passes by. That was accompanied by a low humming sound that quickly increased in volume til you couldn't hear anything else. The floor moved so much that I could only take a step backward to stand under the door frame of the bathroom and stay there frozen in fear that the tons of concrete above me would, at any second, come crashing down on me. They say the quake lasted 15 seconds. I honestly don't know how long it was. It seemed like forever. The aftershocks during the next few days were very strong and very frightening. It was a terrible thing to go through even for those of us who suffered no damage. I can't imagine what it would have been like for those in the areas around the epicentre.
Again, my prayers are with those in Christchurch.

hidey ho - back again - trying to make sure all I know are safe. This was a different earthquake today from the one that we had in September, news out now is that we can expect aftershocks from both earthquakes still. We were still having aftershocks from the one 6 months ago.

Most people I know are all safe, a few have had some close calls, and a lot have demolished cars and house etc. It's now just started to pour with rain I hope they have got all the homeless into decent shelters.
