    Army Thread Wednesday 16th March

Chilltart - my family are from Scotland but my mom and dad emigrated to the US in the late seventies. Me and my sis were born there. My sis is still there as is one of my aunts, her kids and their grankids. My dad moved back about ten years ago and my mom passed away when I was young but she is buried here which is nice. Mr Lynne is Scottish but very excited about the prospect of moving to America. It took me the best part of three years to convince him. He is a graphic designer so can easily work anywhere. His specialism is actually illustration and I feel he is very talented. I have a few friends who work in the creative industries in NYC so they will help him.

    What's your plans for emigrating?

SO how old were you when you left the States? Do you still have a Murrkin accent?

Sorry to hear about lossing your Mum so young, that sucks.....

My plans are on hold for now, Id love to come back to UK, if I had a choice it would be to the Oxfordshire area which I know well as my ex husband had an office there and we spent a lot of time between there and London.

My problem is that as part of my separation agreement my ex was to pay the mortgage on the house i live in. As he is in financial stook he had defaulted and i thought Id lose the house. He says he is now back on track but im not sure where its all going. I guess I will ride it out for now and hopefully if the market ever picks up (its in negative equity :upset I may be able to salvage some cash to move back with.

        Hey spicytart,

That sucks about the mortgage. Is that in Portugal or the uk? As long as he is back on track, you should be ok. The negative equity is a kick in the teeth! I just found out that a flat downstairs is valued significantly below what I paid for mine. Not good. Could your parents help out? Are u happy on the continent? What's going on with the job situ.

I moved over here when I was 18...the day before my eighteenth in fact. I still have an American accent but it's got a Glaswegian twang which makes me sound irish. I will be proper nj when I come back in April!!!

          Hi Cassia, Chilly, and Kitty

Only dropped in for half a minute.

Cassia - didn't realise you could make pesto fresh - the stuff I got from the Co-op was pretty rubbish actually. If you can be bothered to send me a recipe, please do. If not, don't worry about it - I'm sure Mr Google will be able to locate one for me!

Hi Reccie - if you dont make your own for goodness sake boil some pasta to eat with it! :H

Cass -I've been in Portugal 9 years and I love it very much but its a very slow backward way of life and difficult now im single. Parents are not in any financial situ to help im afraid. Im only working part time and its VERY difficult to get work here. Im just getting by and I do love the free time it gives me to go cycle, yoga, hiking etc as you can imagine its a very outdoorsy lifestyle and im only 5 mins from the beach.

Reccie - it's super easy as long as you have a blender. Get a small bag of basil, half a bag of pine nuts, about 200g gran padano shredded, on garlic clove and about 100 ml extra vinegar olive oil. Blend. Easy!

Chill - it's a hard one! Part of the reason you must love Portugal is the fact that you can do all the outdoors activities and you getthe weather for it. Moving back here would mean a full time job and not having that freedom. I don't really know what to say. Life has a funny way of deciding these things for u.

Well, from what you say, the climate out there sounds brilliant, so in that respect it would appeal, as would the slow, backward way of life. Trouble is that I'm deaf, so learning to understand a new spoken language would be a big problem, though I'm sure I could learn to read and write it fairly quickly. Are there any English speakers out there? I have been (slowly!) getting my house ready to go on the market but am uncertain about where to go.

Are you completely deaf? Im deaf in my right ear since birth.

Thanks Cass. That does sound easy. Yep, I do have a blender. I'll give it a go soon - need to buy the pine nuts and Grana Padano first.

Reccie - the best way to blend it is to put in about half of the oil and then judge if it is too stiff as you blend it. There is nothing worse then oily pesto. Also, pine nuts are expensive. I used chopped mixed nuts sometimes. You can really use any nut.
