He is to whom many people owe the return of their lives as they once knew them, and no doubt saved many others from death. He discovered that high-dose baclofen has a non-linear "switch" effect in which, for many, baclofen has not much effect until reaching a dramatic threshold dose, at which point the patient suddenly becomes indifferent to alcohol. Necessity, and specifically survival in Dr. Ameisen's case, is the mother of invention.
