looks like things have tightened up in Ireland, got my first refusal from an online pharmacy - InHouse. River Pharmacy also can not complete my order - have a good mate in Toronto who would ship to me (...gift wrap might get through customs...) but looks like River will not ship within CA w/o prescription, presumably they have similar laws as here

Just posting this in case it is of use (...in a negative kinda way:upset:...) to anyone else in ROI

"inHouse Pharmacy - Europe order # XXX
There have been changes in the law for medications shipped to the Republic of Ireland.

Irish Customs now require a valid doctor's prescription to clear the goods from customs otherwise the order will be confiscated and the medications destroyed.

I am sorry but we cannot ship any of our products to Ireland. Your order has now been cancelled and refunded."

I remember Ireland being a real bitch for other people too. They had to order it to an address in Britain and go and collect it. Either that, or go to Spain/Portugal, and buy it over the counter apparently.

hi, just to confirm regarding Dr Chick, he prescribes up to 100mg per day. He previously prescribed naltrexone for me which didn't really do too much. I'm seeing him early next month so will probably start a thread here of my own. I asked if my GP would have to carry on prescribing were he to contact her and this is what he just told me.

"Often the GP takes over the prescription if the specialist has started it and monitored that it is successful for the first 4-6 weeks."

Thanks Bleep for suggestion on Spain/Portugal, and Chelsea for post on Dr Chick (I hope your appointment goes well for you). I emailed Dr Chick, he replied immediately and I have booked an appointment for week after next (the idea being that I can get a UK script filled in NI....and that he would be happy to talk to a local GP about taking over....)

As I just blundered on to MWO looking for info on baclofen, I haven't said anything much about me. The short version is that I drink, a lot, always wine, and have been doing so for about 14-15 years. Once managed to stay sober for 5 months (after reading Alan Carr's book) but relapsed. Trying again and saw a passing reference to baclofen in a new self-help book. Googling baclofen, I found you guys .....

Wine was also my choice of poison. You can only imagine my surprise when one day I decided that 1 glass would be enough!

Chick will be helpful, but as far as I know, he will only go to 100 mg's and no higher. That was his limit a year or two ago, I don't know if has revised it since. Still, there are other ways, and perhaps 100 will be enough anyway.

              Best of luck Joan.

I can only imagine! Last night I had 'just 1 glass' and then finished the bottle. Congratulations on doing so well.

I wonder is there something special about wine. Saw something online about wine (but not beer/spirits) having some sort of effect on GABA system but can't find the link... Then again, wine comes in bigger bottles than beer and is cheaper than spirits, maybe that's what makes it so attractive.

Dr. Levin's license to practice and prescribe medicine has been suspended. He's a gracious man who helped a lot of people, but IMO, I think we should leave him alone so he can focus on his legal situation.

You can search for doctors on this thread:

                          https://www.mywayout.org/community/f2...ors-78141.html

Or if you're comfortable taking a leap of faith, you can find "under the table" sources of baclofen (it not difficult at all if you read through the threads) and dosing schedules. I'm sure many people on here have Dr. Levin's schedule.
In the middle of my life's journey, I found myself in a dark wood, as I had lost the straight path. It is a difficult thing to speak about, how wild, harsh and impenetrable that wood is. Just thinking about it recreates the fear. It is scarcely less bitter than death, but in order to tell of the good that I found there, I must tell of the other things I saw there. --Dante, paraphrased

One of the receptors that alcohol stimulates is the GABA-A receptor. GABA-A receptor stimulation results in relaxation and relief of anxiety. Some people drink, in part, to calm symptoms of anxiety. In this type of patient, when the alcohol is taken away, the original anxiety becomes symptomatic, along with new alcohol withdrawal anxiety. So now the patient has to deal with two types of anxiety, and frequently with a dysphoric mood as well. This type of psychological suffering can be one of the reasons for relapse.

Baclofen for alcohol dependence can be a helpful treatment strategy. Baclofen is an old muscle relaxant. It mainly works as a GABA-B agonist. It is typically used in high doses for patients with severe muscle spasticity from neurologic diseases. Baclofen can be thought of as a parallel agonist to alcohol. Working as a GABA-B agonist, Baclofen can alleviate anxiety and dysphoria. I have found it to be very helpful with the appropriately selected patients.

                              Doctors in Massachusetts?

Can anyone recommend a doctor willing to prescribe high-dose Baclofen in Massachusetts? I have ordered online and am on my fourth day of titrating up, but I would much rather have a legit prescription and medical counsel.

Hi, Gardentender. Welcome to the forum.

I don't know of anyone specifically, but I would guess that it's pretty likely that you can find someone if you're in or around Boston. EDIT: Even if you're not, it's pretty likely.

I think googling psychiatrists who specialize in addiction, and calling their practices and asking, might find you someone. It's hard to say whether or not people are prescribing high dose baclofen, but baclofen is definitely on the radar now.

Let us know how it turns out!
