Nar, the other night when I was cleaning up from guests, it crossed my mind to just drink the rest in the bottle and get it over with. Now where did that come from??? Like you, I just pushed that away.

NS, This was a golden nugget to me. Being committed to a sober life does not erase the hard wired thoughts about the substance we are addicted to, but its very important to understand and be at peace with the fact that fleeting feelings coming from the voice of AL don't mean anything about us now, tomorrow or in the future. Those fleeting feelings should point to one single thing- the reminder of how powerful a hold AL had on us, and the importance of never letting our guard down again.

I have felt guilty, scared, and anxious at times when I've had these feelings- like I had done something wrong or was going to. Having the feelings doesn't mean that you are guilty, bad, inadequately sober, tinkering on the brink of falling, or in danger. Addiction is ingrained in us, and it is why the thought happens. To deny, ignore or attempt to box up that piece of the problem only gives it more power. I like to be on friendly terms with my demons- this way there's less of a chance of getting sucker punched by an unchecked impulse to drink. I also enjoy taking a fleeting AL voice thought and putting a funny spin on it, for eg to say to myself, "Now THAT would be a really brilliant idea!" (May as well drink and just get it over with.) Have a good laugh and move on. Thanks so much for sharing about this. Alcohol is in our faces every day; its important to be mindful of it and find a way to keep it light.

MyLuck, Thanks for the article. It got me thinking that if I had to pick one type of scenario where AL made things easier the same way WD40 helps lessen friction , it would be socializing with family. Family is a wonderful thing to have and yet it can be so frustrating and maddening to tolerate a loved one's quirks. No 2 ways about it, if I could reintroduce drinking AL to excess solely at family events, one ugh in my life would get a lot more manageable. But this is like an Objet d'art in a very fancy store. I KNOW I cant afford it

Big, exciting day for me today. Been musing about getting another dog over the last months. (We lost our last of 4 dogs last August 11th). I've researched breeds, and rescue groups, (glad I did when I fell in love breeds that upon further reading turned out not to be a great match for us). Boiled it down to a few breeds that seemed mutually agreeable to all of us (Dachsunds, Corgis, GoldenDoodles, Beagles). The boys felt strongly about getting a rescue, so I plugged our criteria into Adopt A Pet.com, saved the search, and then began receiving emails from rescue groups with prospects.

Toby, the doberman in Seattle left a huge impression on me- in just about every way possible; but I knew getting a doberman was probably a little more than we could handle. Then yesterday, one of the luckiest, best, more beautiful things in the world happened to me. I received an email from Adopt A Pet.com with a photo & story that melted my heart. Then I learned about Indian Paraiah dogs.

I think the search may be over Gloamers! Red was picked up at the airport by his foster Mom yesterday at 6pm. He's come all the way from Indian via an organization called Rescue Without Borders (he comes with an international certificate, all vaccination, has been neutered and microchipped). We are meeting him today at 3pm and I am over the moon excited. Trying to ramp it down in case things don't go well, but still basically over the moon. Hubs is being unbelievably cool and the kids are psyched too.

Here he is, and this is his story.

PS In India he was called Bhola. I am not sure how long they have been calling him Red. Does anyone have any thoughts on names? N

Nar, I actually like Bhola. I also like Bhaiya. Was wondering if you could think of any cool Indian names that are short, easy to pronunciate and end in a vowel? Or should we just keep him Red? Or Bhola?

Red was rescued by an organization called Rescue Without Borders. He is 5 months old and has come all the way from India!

About Red** * Red is very soft at heart (MASUM), with a sweet and loving nature. He is very playful and likes to play with all dogs and likes the company of people too. He is so much Innocent/Bhola by nature that if you will give food he will eat and if not he will not ask, sit quietly. Sometimes my mom used to scold him when he is naughty(while playing with her) and if she softly hit him ,that time too he doesn't react but sit quietly. As I have already mentioned to you in my earlier mail that when he was outside on road that time too when people use to bully him or misbehaved with him that time too he just cried and never harmed anybody.

He will be a true companion and loyal till his last breath to the family who will adopt him. *He has that shine,that warmth in his heart that he will melt the hearts of each and every person he* greet/meet. He has the MAGIC to bring smile on sad and dull faces *

Oh Jane! What a beautiful dog! I am going to look up that rescue, what a great idea. The name Bhola is kinda neat...other names I can come up with are: Sonu, Dimpy, Raja, Pumpy, Rimple, Mutoo...
I love the dog, I am sure he will make you and your family very happy whatever his name is

Hi Gloamers,

I met the little guy yesterday His foster mom couldn't be nicer. I took the boys over to her house and met her family. It was chaotic. There was a new born in a carrier on the kitchen table, her daughter & son in law, their mastiff, her rottweiller, an Indian dog that she rescued 3 years ago, several cats & and the 2 jet lagged newbies. It wasn't until I got home later that I got a handle on defining the group; at the time it seemed like it could have been 15 people, 10 dogs, 6 cats and a baby. Her house was neat as a pin and the animals well cared for but it was hard to get one on one with Red without Rocky getting in between. He is a very sweet dog and so is Cherry. Cherry's foot is in need of care. They are not related but they go together so well. Today I go back to pick him up and bring him home. I cant wait!

Like any new mother I'm nervous! He is very quiet and easy going. I can only imagine what he feels like having been uprooted, medicated(?) for the flight, greeted by a brand new bunch of people and animals (the foster fam), and then meeting us. He wouldn't take a biscuit from me and it want like he got in my lap and looked at me lovingly, but he is affectionate, easy going, and we all loved him. He would not take a biscuit from me which worried me. Maybe it was a shitty biscuit? Im just really excited about picking him up and getting to know him, showing him around his new digs. I will also receive his papers today. He is vaccinated, neutered, and micro chipped but I am still concerned as he was a street dog. Disease, rabies & parasites are a problem for the stray dogs in India. He was the only survivor of his litter. He has a few small scars where he is missing fur. According to his Indian foster Mom the chilldren used to bully him and throw rocks at him. So we got a lot of stuff going on. I only hope that he is healthy, and that his relative shyness is related to all the circumstances.

I'm going to take him to the vet today just to be safe. He needs his ears cleaned and I'm scared to do it myself in case there is an infection in which case it would be very painful. I'm trying to forget that I saw what looked like fleas on the big black dog when we were outside patting him.

Nar, thank you for those suggestions...I am still mulling it over. The boys don't seem to care as much but have already rejected Bhola and Teddy. A1 doesnt want a foreign name, A2 is pretty simple (and picky), hubs is holding it together pretty well and making an effort to show interest (he liked Teddy as a contender).
The 4 shibas shed like nothing you have seen before so when we moved in hubs put gates up everywhere and had strict rules (no dogs allowed on furniture or upstairs). He has come a long way. I lobbied and won on no gates, and I'm willing to go along with keeping him off the new furniture but in the living room where we watch tv, Id like to hand with the little guy on the couch. I didn't see him shed one single hair during our visit. I'm hoping I can reign it in over the weekend and not exclusively focus on Red. The boys go back to their Mom this evening, and I forsee excellent chances of hubs getting jealous about me bonding with Red.

I vote for "Redford" with "Red' for short. Then, when he's in trouble you can say "Red-FORD!" in a very serious voice. He'll know what's up. Dogs are SMART! He is really good looking - I love the white markings on his chest. Have fun!

I bet you're right about that! Our dogs like those "collision treats"...you know the ones that have the bacon/cheese or bacon/peanut butter flavors mixed. I am sure you'll find something he likes. You are so experienced with dogs anyway.

He is GORGEOUS!!! Sweetest face ever! Can't wait til you get him on that couch and spoil the devil out of him!
