    Weight loss after menopause

    Hi Betty,
I also have a yoga workout that I can post here, when I get a few minutes to look for it at RealAge.com. Right now I'm offline until I get home from a family gathering, until Sunday p.m.

      Weight loss after menopause

      Good morning.

Living out of a hotel makes it tough on the diet!! But, I have done as well as I could this week.

I have been eating fruits (sugar, I know, I know) and veges and drinking some protein drinks.

I have been walking to the client but really need to get a simple exercise routine I can do in the hotel room. I hate going to the hotel gyms. They are always crowded and I just don't fit in with the 20 and 30 somethings that are there.

I will Google and see if I can come up with a routine I feel like this out-of-shape body can do on the road.

I do feel good about tackling this. I have gained an inordinate amount of weight since I quit drinking. It is time to take it back off and get into better shape.

        Weight loss after menopause

        Hi Everyone,

I woudl like to join in. I am not a good join-iner, as I often forget to post, but you are all seem to be where I'm at also right now.

Namaste, I love the Ali McGraw video. Will have to find it & get it out.

As soon as I can I am goign to order the urban-rebounder (hopefully next week) and use it in front of TV.

I am goign to read that article you posted Sunbeam. Sounds perfect. I had a hyster & that year my drinking bagan to increase. I have been steadily gaining since then.

Oh I am 4'11" 143 lbs (I thinbk) can't believe that. I have always been rather athletic so it is all in my upper body. Oh and I am 62 & feel like I am 25 inside. Funny. I think that's good. We shoudl all strive to be ageless I say.

          Weight loss after menopause

Hello, Sunbeam, Cinders, Tough in Texas, Kazuti, Sweaty Betty, Namaste, Chrysa, and anyone else that comes along!

I finally exercised yesterday, not that I was trying to avoid it, but I usually start with walking and/or riding my horse, and we had 2 days of orange level ozone, so it really was "stay inside" weather. I need to dig up my exercise DVDs and set up my DVD player where I've got a little room to move. I have 2 I bought fairly recently (but haven't actually done- though I do remember -barely- drinking wine and just checking them out!).
One is Bollywood Booty and the other is Brazilian Body. Both are a lot of dance moves with fun music, and can be done inside, so I guess I have no excuse for too hot weather. I think I'll wait until I've got the house to myself, however!

I did start tracking my food and calorie intake as well, which is pretty easy when you cut all the junk stuff out. Does anyone know of an easy to use site for this? I found one that looked good but never did figure it out!

Also, I am not actually menopausal, and have very few symptoms, but I definitely have the body fat redistribution going on (and I thought it was just beer doing it, and had actually switched to wine and hard liquor to try and stop the belly pooch!). That sort of makes me laugh, but also disgusts me to even write that down. YUCK!!!! We're all so much better off without that!!!

Anyway, here's to being healthier, happier, and fitter women.

          Much love!

                Weight loss after menopause

                Hi Everybody,
Welcome Chrysa; anyone may join this group who feels they belong.

I believe that the TWO pieces of 4-layer chocolate cake I ate over the weekend will prevent any weight loss this week, but I am back to work full-time starting tomorrow, and the structure of that will be good.

On work days I have a pretty consistent breakfast: oatmeal with ground flaxseed and blueberries, and an orange; lunch is usually 12 oz. homemade veggie soup, plus baby carrots and an apple during the day. Dinner will be whatever we are having on a small plate, one serving. IF I am hungry I can have one serving nut mix (almonds, walnuts, toasted soy nuts, and craisins) OR 10 AllBran crackers with 1/2 glass skim milk. I don't count calories, and allow myself to eat extra fruits and fresh veggies without sugar or dressing. I get a daily email from CalorieCount.com, and I keep an occasional journal there of ideas I'm trying for weight loss success.

Cinders, here's a simple workout you can do anywhwere:

and Betty, here's some simple yoga

                  Weight loss after menopause

OK it's Monday, weigh-in day for me. I am at 145.5, 1/2# MORE than recorded here last week. There's that chocolate cake! Also it is cooler and I have on heavy jeans: how many excuses can you make up? But I still feel good about getting some new strategies into place.

                    Weight loss after menopause

                    Hello, everyone-

This morning I weighed in at 140 (-5 lbs!). I'll assume there might have been some "water weight" in there somewhere, but I'll take it for now. I am aiming for 1 lb per week, and checked our the dailyplate.com site Betty recommended. Something about seeing calories expended vs. taken in seems to be effective for me, much like the MWO Drinktracker does to prevent AL consumption. It's amazing how full you get eating only healthy foods, while staying within your recommended calorie range, as well as being healthier, unlike when I used to deduct my AL calories first, then figure out how much food to consume. Not real good for one. The lengths we go to sometimes.....

I personally find I have to eat a fairly high protein diet, and lots of vegetables, and fresh fruit in season.
I really have to watch grain or bread carbohydrate intake, or I blow right up. I never could do that food pyramid thing, even with whole grains. I do eat oatmeal and brown rice, just not too much (I'd eat brown rice all day long if I could, trust me!). I feel a lot better physically as well as mentally on this type diet. While losing 10 to 15 lbs is a goal, I'm most concerned about being healthy and feeling better, and tell myself as I walk sometimes about gaining a strong body, strong healthy heart and lungs, etc to stay motivated even I don't appear to be losing weight.

A couple other things I am getting back into are step exercises (I found this thing cleaning out my mom's house), which I guess there are specific exercises to go with it, but even just stepping up and down off the thing while watching tv gives quite an aerobic workout, and really tightens the butt and thighs. Plus, I have no excuse that it's too hot (or cold and rainy one of these days!) to walk outside.
The other is a book I have called The Core Program by Peggy Brill, which incorporates stretching and flexibility as well as core strength. It's very easy to read and follow, and is targeted especially to women.

I saw some live music last night, so I danced for 2 hours, and rode my horse twice this weekend, and the little beasty is more fit than I am, even though he's older than me in horse years! Another incentive to work out and eat right! Oh, yeah, I walked fast up and down the driveway while I left him out to graze for 20 minutes (instead of having a beer and watching him). Every little step counts!

Thanks again Sunbeam for starting this group, and let's all keep it up!

                    Much love all!!!

                      Dancelot,
Your post is discouraging for me. You aren't in the age group for this thread, and you are losing weight like the rest of the world does. Oh well.

                        Weight loss after menopause

                        Hi, Sunbeam-

Sorry, I did not intend to discourage anyone! Trust me, I was more shocked than anyone. Also, though I'm not technically menopausal, I am age 54 and 6 months, have the weight shift to the middle section, plus now that I'm AF the hot flashes are back every day. So I think I'm well on my way, and actually think this was delayed by my excessive AL consumption. Plus I still weigh more than when I drank. Also, I'm 5' 2", so I ain't there yet!

I put on this newest weight (8 lbs, which was in addition to the original excess) after I "moderated" for 2 weeks about 2 months back, and it's been stubbornly hanging on until now. I have made it a point to exercise more since quitting drinking, and had been sitting on my butt like I tend to do in the summer, cause it's so hot (100s) here.

Have you read any of Dr.Christiane Northrup's books? Woman's Bodies, Women's Wisdom is one and the other is The Wisdom of Menopause. She's an ob/gyn who has a more holistic approach, and she goes into changing nutritional needs as we age, one of which is changing our protein, fat and carb ratios, which I try to follow (when I am making an effort to eat right, that is!).

I also notice I will gain or at least not lose weight when I am depressed or stressed (the cortisol thing?), and I've been elated recently about being able to stop AL, so I think my moods and metabolism are definitely connected.

Anyway, let's keep it up and support one another!

                        Much love!!! - Dancelot

Good for you Sunbeam, yu are actually inspiring me!...Dr. Northrup has it going on. I read her little book recently, The Secret Pleasures of Menopause, it is a must read.
I have taken a leap this morning..hoping to do 30 days AF, so hopefully I'll hang around here a little more often.

                              Dancelot,
My apologies, I thought you had said you were younger. I misinterpreted "I am not actually menopausal", even though I now see that you are close to my age.

I do have a book by Christine Northrup on my shelf. I think she is pretty far out there for my more traditional approaches to life, though I would not try to discourage anyone from anything that helps them.

Yes, we should try to support each other.

                                Weight loss after menopause

Hi, am really pleased to be reporting a 2lb weight loss. I have to credit using the daily plate function at livestrong.com , once I became aware of all the little extras I was consuming, it seemed to be quite difficult to consume the recommended daily of 1700+ calories recommended for me, and I certainly haven't been obsessive in the counting.

I saw a doctor who specialises in Integrated medicine yesterday, he looked at the whole picture, my thyroid/gynae/depression issues, which I usually see individual docs for. He said immediayely looking at previous blood panels I've had done that my progesterone was very low and had been for some time, which if addressed would bring me back into 'balance'. I've had blood taken this morning, and am so hoping he has some answers for me.

Dancelot - that's a great loss, well done!

Sunbeam, - I'm 41 and perimenopausal - is that ok?

Go all the 'mid life' ladies!!
