I can't listen to this without breaking down. I chose this song for my Daddy's memorial service, because he had these huge, scarred hands, that took care of his mother and little brothers, joined the Marines at 16, served 3 tours in Korea, farmed the land, built his own business, moved historic buildings, loved history and patriotism and his family, and his animals. Most people didn't know the song before the service but there wasn't a dry eye in that packed place when it ended, because it was him. Glad I got a chance to share him, since it makes me feel him around me when I hear it.
BTW: That little boy sitting in the car is his first great grandson, born 8 years after his death. He looks and acts just like Daddy Neal. His momma says they spent time together before he was born, and I believe it!

This song absolutely sounds like my childhood. I heard it from the benches, built a hundred years ago by my ancestors, in the 1830 era church with all the doors open and the paper fans going, the honkey-tonk sounding piano plinking out the music and the old mountain men tapping their feet, holding up the hymnals, waving their hands and singing out the words. My Uncle Manuel had this played at his funeral, and I'll always think of him now when I hear it. Can you being to see how ingrained this type music is in my heart and soul?!

Love this song. Alan's momma showed me the original papers, all framed, where he woke in the middle of the night thinking of 9-ll and wrote it, almost without correction, freehand. His dad was a veteran too; the family supports the military. Good people.
